2008 BMW E90 M3 ADVICE ON BUYING THE ONE I FOUND

HI,

I was asking the for the trade value on the vehicle before on a previous post and got plenty views but one comment that didn't give me the answer I was looking for.

So after phoning around and having the vin number i have found the details a required but with some other issues to it.

Trade Value= R 270 000
Was informed that it had a comment on it. Was told that it hit a pothole etc. After finding a decent person that could assist me, the amount on the comments were to the value of R 130k. So asking what was all done the only remarks that could show up on his side of the system was Rt Fnt Fender, Head light, Bumper. He could not see any more and said that I should contact DBN ACR to get the rest of the info. They want ID# etc and could not get the real damage report.

I have put in a offer to the trade price but there is still work that need to done to it cosmetically i.e. bumper, stone chips on bonnet, and the under carriage done not have any of then plastic lining to etc.

So calling BMW just to get a rough quote on what i could see the replacing part come to +- R 20k without the respraying of the the bonnet etc.

The question is the seller came back at R 290k he would let it go and I take it as is or he repairs it at the asking Price of R 330k and pay well over resale value. For R 290k it allot car for what you get and the gear box prop and diff have been repaired or replaced by BMW MP at 85k km. it needs a oil service and spark plug change and micro aircon filter change.

IS IT REALLY WORTH THE MONEY OR SHOULD I STICK TO THE R 270k.

Hi Revs,

I think we will need a bit more information to give a correct answer.

What is the mileage of the car?
Has the car had all of its services?
What is the condition of the bearings?
Is it an M-dynamic?
What is the general condition of the car?
Do you have interior / exterior pictures?
Were the actuators replaced?
Why was the gear box prop and diff replaced?
What extra's does it have?

Kid

Hmm.. maybe counter with R280k and hold your ground. It's not like V8 M3's are scarce on the market.. another will always come around..

The market is on your side as a buyer..

Well, I am no expert on the S65, but as has been alluded to, throttle actuators and connecting rod bearings will be risk areas on this engine.

It doesn't have MDM, is a manual, has a sizeable comment on the MP. All those things will affect future resale value, but are not really deal breakers if you're OK with them (although MDM does make a big difference to the experience when driving spiritedly). At that age/mileage, bearings and actuators are risky items, like AdiS says.

I'd be more worried about the shoddy state of the car and parts missing - they don't really indicate a caring owner.

Stick with your offer of 270, and move on if he doesn't bite.

Are you saying it doesn't have mdm cause it's a manual or for another reason?

No, there are manual cars with MDM. This one doesn't have it because original owner/dealer which purchased it didn't spec it. :D

Thanks, had me scratching my head for a minute, lol

That must have been a hell of a pothole to require a new bumper, headlight, fender and to lose bits of the undertray completely. You don't mention that wheels were replaced LOL. Knowing it has a 130K comment and the current owner is saying it was just a 'pothole' would be enough for me to walk away. The seller could give you the report if he wanted to or if it was in his interest to. 99.9% chance that bearings and actuators are not done and even if he said they were, would you believe it?

If you really want it, don't go any higher than 270K. If he sells it, good luck to the new owner and search for one with fewer/no stories. If not, he will eventually bite at 270K.

Just read this post now, and i see most guys didn't point out the '130k pothole damage'
I would agree with you llew..
You tend to question the seller's ethics. Common sense will kick in when you ask yourself how could a headlight break with a pothole damage.
To the O.P
You should the sellet to print out the details of the comment.
Chances are.. he's hiding more from you.
I should steer clear..

I picked up a Z4M last year, and without asking the seller pulled the complete history of the car....transparency, ask the seller to get you the history, that way you be able to make an informed decision knowing all the facts, id rather spend a little more, and get a well looked after specimen.....

This.

If he has nothing to hide, and he wants to sell the car, why do you have to chase up on obtaining details from the comments?

+1 you don't want to buy a performance car from someone that can't be straight with you about the negative aspects of the car. There's plenty of v8 m3's on the market. A bit of searching and you'll find the right one.

Walk away from this one. Another will pop up. This one will need bearings done anyway and that will set you back circa 25K.

I sold my '08 fully specced M Dynamic DCT E92 with 123k km's on the clock for 290K. And it was in excellent condition with four brand new tyres I fitted the weekend before the sale.

For R290k the chances are good you're buying a lemon. Pothole + headlight change = dodgy. As others have said rather walk away from this one, 99% bearings will be a "must do" item on the list with 90 000km as will throttle actuators. No M Dynamic is abit of a let down IMO.

So i took the advice of waiting for another one to come and let that one go. Wasn't feeling right with all the things to do on it. Waiting was the right thing to do as i was able to find a proper one. Same KM on the clock but with everything on that can be put on a M and at a good price too 300k.
