2006 650i Convertible Active Steering Fault

Hi All

I am new to the forum and have the following situation with a 650i that I purchased about 6 months ago. The previous owner did about 2000 kms in two years and had to replace the battery because I believe it wasn't driven often enough to keep the charge at the correct level and that might have caused the AS error as observed on a number of websites and forums. He claimed at the time of purchase that the AS error only stuck its ugly head out after replacing the battery.

I had it evaluated by BMW and they diagnosed that the active steering module
PN 32 30 6 788 842 and the Steering Angle Sensor/Coil Spring Assembly PN 61 31 6 976 394 have to be replaced.....nothing that the battery (or low steering fluid) was causing apparently...

They also found a number of other faults which I am planning to have them repaired bit by bit because their total estimate was around R80k - so the reason for the post is to find out if there are any kind hearted BMW fanatics /fundis out there that can assist me with advice etc..

I also want to do a complete re-spray in time ( because it was not looked after very well - lots of scratches and bad repair work) and fix up the interior as well. I am not painting a very good picture of the car as it is a beautiful vehicle but it is just that I am a bit of a pain in my own backside and would ultimately like to get the car back to tip top condition .......but not sure if I should cut my losses and look for another one in better condition.

Thanks and have a good one!

Hi Bud

I get the same error now and then and its always been when the battery has run excessively flat.

Have driven it like that and obviously the steering feels heavy until the battery charges up again and then has always sorted itself out.

It may just be low voltage.

I would try a new battery and see if that helps..first.

Thanks for the info....However..

The battery is new and keeps charge according to the battery test done.

When the error occurs, I actually don't have any "funnies" happening on the steering - it operates completely normal and as light as one would expect - except if the steering is at some angle when switching the ignition off and then starting up and driving off - the error comes up again and then the steering is at an angle....sometimes.....but corrects itself fairly rapidly again with no funnies.

It actually doesn't bother me but when selling it, it might bother the potential buyer and scare them away...

Cheers

Okay do this first before splurging on new parts.

First make sure the battery is registered and coded for the correct size. You can do this via icarly, protool or inpa. Next make sure battery is full before doing the next step.

Disconnect the battery and leave it off for 15 minutes then reconnect. Male sire the steering and wheels are straight before switching car off and disconnecting.

When you reconnect, the active steering fault will immediately pop up. Turn steering complete full turn to the left, pause, then right, pause, then left again, pause, and then bring it to normal center position.

That should remove the fault. That provide calibrates the active steering as required.

You can monitor from here and see if it pops up again.
