Hi guys, just bought a 2005 X5 3.0d with 140k miles. When accelerating its making a loud wooshing noise and lacks power, Once its got moving and picked a little speed up the noise quietens and picks its feet up. The best way to describe the woosh is as if the heaters are increasing with the revs to full power then down (it not the heaters as held my hands over them). Any suggestions. Thanks in advance

@B///Moodley 's had a similar problem. Evident turbo spool in the cabin, louder than stock. Though no change in fuel consumption or performance. We suspected a boost leak or similar, but it was traded before the root of the problem could be find. Maybe he can shed some light.

thanks for the reply guys. I forgot to mention the noise is evident when driving but if stationary and you rev it right up it is hardly noticeable at all. it does sound like it's a big leak when driving as quite loud.

more than likely a boost leak, seals for all the boost pipes come to roughly R1000 from BMW :coolShake: simple enough to DIY

not sure if these came with the stainless or cast manifold? If it has the stainless manifold then it could potentially have cracked. :hammerhead:

This problem made us go paranoid and eventually lead to us selling the car(we had told the new owner about the problems) After speaking to the guys at RK motion about it he said he thinks it's most probably on the exhaust side as we had no lack in power or gain in consumption. Later testing the exhaust side of things we heard that it's the turbo side. So that question remains unanswered.

///MPower FTW!!! Torque FTW!!!

I think the only way to find out what that is would be to get it to your mechanic and let him remove the turbo setup and check for visible signs. If not then he would probably have a look see around the engine bay to find and eliminate the problem.

Well guys just spent a couple of hours investigating. Firstly the SH is false as its fully stamped and when stripping down the cabin filter and the air filter were both black and I mean black with the date 19 oct 2010 So no service for 5yrs :-s Secondly the cam case breather was missing the paper filter. Thirdly I started the car with all that removed and moved my hand about under the air filter housing and could feel the manifold blowing so went inside and pinched one of the wifes little mirrors and had a look with a torch and BOOM seen a split in the manifold. Looks like I'm ordering a cast manifold off ebay today and a nice job for me next week ha ha. Thanks again guys for the help. Oh and yes it will be getting a service too ha ha.

Well Bought a cast manifold off ebay for £69.95 inc gaskets nuts and bolts. Fitted like a glove, now no blowing. Drives like a new car and goes like stink. It was possible to change with out removing the injectors and rocker cover. Very tight and fidley but do able by loosening the turbo bracket from the block 2x 13mm bolts then everything else from top making sure to tighten manifold and manifold to turbo before tightening turbo bracket back up.
