Got to tell you, I would LOVE to do this project, rebuild from one to another, wish I had the time, this would take me like 2 years to do.

You're right it is exciting but nerve wrecking too.... not everyone is as passionate as the people I've been reading about on thus forum.

I haven't signed anything but will go and have a look tomorrow and try and see if I can't get some pics of the car's open engine.

Where is the car at the moment? Im also from the Bellville area. I think you must chat to Allie at ART (seeing as you not in a hurry:rollsmile: ) or to Wessel at motorcade. Those are the guys that we (at automobil concierge) would suggest for such a massively complicated job.

All the best, let the getz be inspiration to get you going:rollsmile:

I will contact them during the course of the day and see what say. Thanks for the help. Let me chat to Fred 1st

Just to add my views, if i may?

We live in SOUTH AFRICA guyz!!!!:joy:
"ons maak n plan" I have seen many wierd and interesting conversion in my life, most recent was an old 1400 Bakkie with its ORIGINAL A14 NSSAN Motor with a custom Fuel Injected intake manifold which only uses 1 injector (its been carb fed for almost 35 Years), thats a smart idea hey.

As mentioned on 1 reply in this thread, as long as you have all looms/control units/modules/keys+control boxes, you are A & Away!!!

Hi All

Managed to slip away from the office to go and see Fred.

Its quite simple - he's not keen to do conversion as he admitted that's something he's never done - not on that scale... done other cars but nothing as complex as a 7 series Beemer. :flyfun:

He will be able to do an engine replacement but not keen on fixing as per your suggestions even building up from spares etc. I understand his dilemma to a degree as this is a project for him and his team and not just servicing and repairs which he has plenty of to do!! :nonono:

Fred mentioned to me that it's most likely that the oil pump failed and true to the early e65's and their dodgy electronics no warning!!!

Attached two pics I took today. The piston closest to the gearbox was moving at approximately 1cm without the rest of pistons moving a mm. Damages seems a bit more than i thought but hey I'm not a mechanic and if there's a rattle I get nevous.... :argh:

The turbo seems fine as there are no sweating or leaks or any visible damage. Fred did point out that it doesn't seem like the engine overheated and the fact that I stopped immediately may have helped - for what it's worth :thumbdo:

Thank you to all for the advice and contacts that were sent to my PM. As today was the first day back in the office I couldn't contact everyone I wanted to but will contact them throughout the next few days. A few members gave me some contacts in CT that might be willing to do the fix and maybe the conversion - again thanks :ty:

Man it was sad to see her standing there

I did forget to mention that we had a bit of a tough time finding the code next to the engine number 30 6 D2. We figured this is what one of the members requested from me - 3L, 6 cylinder and then D2 not quite sure what that means - is that like a second version or like in software development v3.6.D2?

No,

There were physical changes to the motor, but mostly in the intake ect.

Reason why the early 330d's swalled swirl flaps ect.

I do however think you need to get that car out there as soon as possible though,

You do not experiment with an E65 on this scale, without knowing what your doing.

The bottom end mechanics should be pretty simple to do, why the issue ?

I got to say this on another note.

I have driven the 745i (almost bought one) and the 730d, did buy one.

The 730d pushed out more torque, so out of the two, I prefer it.

The 745 is quicker, but who drives more then 200km per hour nowadays anway.

200km/h but while towing a house :)

The 7 has a different block to the 3/5 series from what I can gather. I guess it has to do with mountings? I guess you would have to hold the blocks next to each other in order to compare them.

Other than that, it is a cast iron block, so it should be easy to rebuild. the moving piston is possibly a broken conrod, either way, unless it is sticking out the side, you won't know if the engine is salvageable before you strip it down.

It will be cheaper to buy a 745i than to convert this into one.

Interesting P1000,

Whould they not have denoted it another code, M57N as far as I know are all the same. with varients, but block the same.

Would love if anybody had more info.

+1 on the cheaper to buy a complete one versus convert this one... but this would be sooooo much fun :)

I wish I had an E65 to stuff around with.

Hi Leonard

Jip was thinking that too - I will contact the leads I received last night and check who is willing to do the job.

Yes the diesel is great and I've done 14km/l once or twice on a long haul trip and driving at 100km/h. And yes you maybe right it might be the snob in me wanting to drive that V8 and hear that deep growl which I've never heard in a 6. Just something else.

I've just had so much bad luck with diesels that I'm too scared to get diesels again. 1st Ford 25td D/C bakkie compensator issues on 40 000km and constant fuel issues as I had to drive to various places where you can only find 500ppm diesel, fixed under guarantee but never the same after the fix

VW 1,9Tdi Passat turbo failure at 70 000km fixed and car was great after fix but ws without car for 2 months with fighting with dealerships and Dispatch..:yuck:

I'll post any news once I have chatted to a few of the recommended contacts.

Hi P1000

That is what my Mrs keep on telling me - Engine R65k - labour for rebuild R20k.

Saw a brilliant e38 740i from a private seller in Bellville with new tires and FSH etc with 145k on the odo for R80k.... thought hmmm:praise:

Was my wedding car too so I do have a little soft spot for the car Bond wrecked (even though it was a 750 in the movie). Think its the same model A1exander is fixing.

The last thing I want to do now is move the car again for it to stand for another 6 months at a different dealer before I can get a engine or parts. The fact that I battle to find an engine and or parts made me lean towards going for petrol. They seem to be easier to get nationwide and international. The diesels were sent to SA and most Eastern European countries so can't even get parts from the US. Someone told me or it could be on Bimmerforum (where I'm a member too) that the 740d is such a great engine but there were no or limited interest in SA - pity...

well if I can confuse you a little more, I have heard some lovely sounds from the diesel (or a variant of that engine atleast) that you have in your car there.

E53 X5 3.0D, glorious sound with a full zorst (quad pipes), even has a great gangster dumping sound with the windows down. Then MSMs E90 330d, damn, sounds like a 335!And all you hear is turbo spooling away:inlove: These BMW diesels can sound great with a full exhaust and a bit of fiddling with the ECU. And it does not have to be intrusive at all!

If the motor is overhauled and turbo checked out or replaced even, you can do these small changes and have a mammoth car on your hands.

Just a thought:rollsmile:

Yeah I suppose you guys are right :biglol:

Again guys you're all great and I enjoy the advice and the general chats. Hope I can get round to meet a few of you during the year. I know a few guys tried to do the 'Toy Run' in December but as soon as the 'Enterprise' is fixed I would love to do a Sunday breakfast run with the families.

Anyway had a rough day at the office so hopefully have some feedback for all tomorrow.

Thanks I saw some posts and would love to go. I need to see if I have Airsoft in the morning or afternoon the Saturday, time not fixed yet. Seems like most people will be there on Saturday.

Hope to see you there.

After making a few calls and getting some advice from various people. The conversion would be an interesting project but very few know people who would be willing to take the challenge.

So the only option I have is to get a diesel engine or get someone that can open the engine and rebuild it.

:yuck:

Hope you all have a great week ahead of you and maybe see you at the motor show.

Update:

After doing some phoning and browsing the net i found someone in Cape Town that has an engine - for the D2 with a turbo for R35k......

A friend of mine (London ) suggested eBay (UK one) as there are a lot of 7 series in UK. Well i found some interesting things - some engines going for 1000 - 1500 pounds and some shops even export to South Africa - something to investigate if i have no other solution :thumbdo:

Minimike also made contact with me and offered some help - we will chat soon.

Tomorrow off to get the eyes tested and then take the family to the car show... can't wait to see what is on display.

Enjoy the weekend drive safe

I'll take the project if you give me 6 months to a year to complete it.... :)

Would SERIOUSLY love to do something like this, cause after you have finished, you are, of course, the boss :)

Thanks for the offer Leonard

I will chat to Mike soon and we might just book the train to Boksburg! :joy:

Why did you sell your e65 - running costs or just not keen driving 'motherships'?

A guy that i met recently bought a e65 a few years back for R150k km on odo and acknowledged that it did cost him close to R100k to fix everything but now he drives a mean machine and did the comparison:

1.6 Toyota or an 8 cyl BMW - not a difficult choice for him... yeah i hear him lots of $ but worth every cent :praise:

Hi All

Finally back after a long stint away. I managed to find an engine in JHB and should have it here by next week, fingers crossed. It's one of those exchange deals - old engine goes to JHB and the new one comes to me....

Unfortunately no one in Cape Town wanted to open my engine to determine the extend of the damage. As "Murphy" wanted it my cousin lost his baby to the same disease last month 330d and he managed to get an engine way quicker being a newer model :yuck: Total cost of engine rebuild/replacement R45 000.

Man so wished I had the petrol engine - found plenty around the country.

Seems rather strange that so many people that I speak to mentioned the fact the the diesels don't last, especially our beloved BMW's. If it's not the turbo's then the engines.... could it be our fuel and the heavy footed South African drivers? :nonono:

Hope to report soon on the progress with the new engine and yes I'm rather tired of driving the Getz!!!! :argh:

Why does your motor need to be replaced, for starters

Did it overheat ?

WARNING - POTENTIAL GAY SOUNDING (BUT DEFINITELY NOT GAY) COMMENT ALERT (so I’ve thrown in a gratuitous profanity just to keep the testosterone at an acceptable high level) – Dude - your comments and advice is always so fucking practical, useful and cost effective. I guess the latter comment (sincere compliment) is directed and most of the tech-minded dudes on this forum. Studying for an engineering degree is becoming a serious consideration but I doubt that a degree will give me the practical knowledge that I desire.

Apologies for the threat-jack. Green-envy overwhelmed me thus causing an uncontrolled outburst. Mods may delete or move this.

Just had an update. Engine would arrive by Friday and then hopefully in 10 days I have my baby on the road again. :praise:

BTW does anyone know where one can buy decent auto parts? I'm looking for a right hand mirror for my baby. On my last visit, clumsy me tripped and knocked my own mirror OFF :yuck:

I will post some pictures re the progress while they're doing the engine swop

Hey casiev.

I have a similiar problem. Engine got damaged due to failed oil pump, pistons, crank, sleeves ect. Total cost to repair just under R120K.

Where did you source you engine from? I am thinking of just replacing the engine, will be way cheaper to do.
