2002 E46 320d - Gear Lever Q

Good morning Guys,

The gear lever on my 320d feels very flabby, it takes all gears perfectly - just that I cant feel the selection very well. Is this normal?

Also when I stop and engage no. 1 - I can hear this "rubbery knocking" sound, but its only the first time you engage after stopping...if that makes sense :mmm:

Thanks
V

Best guess would be that you need to have the bushes and washers replaced, and maybe the shift lever as well depending on the amount of wear on the ball joint.

Thanks for the reply.

Bushes and washers on the gearbox itself?
Forgive me, I am a bit clueless as this is my first RWD.

Connection between the gearlever and gearbox - is it a cable or a rod?

Thanks again.

This is what the shifter assembly looks like:

13, 10 and 7 are the most probable stuff that will need replacing, and depending on the amount of wear you might need to replace 6 as well.

If there is a lot of play on the shifting arm (1) you might need to replace 2 and 5 as well.

:thumb: Thanks very much.

I will get the car on ramps a.s.a.p and see whats going on!

At least I have an indication of what to look at.

Thanks Sankekur.

Cool, I hope you get it sorted. That is the best you can do, just inspect it will be the easiest way to determine where the problem is.
