Hi Fanatics

I need to decide with 300400km on the clock of my baby. Do i fix everything and keep her, or do i sell, put some moola on top of the amount i sell her for and then buy a newer model.

I really love this car and she didnt give any problems to me like left me next to the road.

Concern is now a lot of long distance driving is waiting on me. Each end of month 2000km to be driven.

I also want to buy cash again and do not want to own any bank installments.

Thanks

If you can afford it keep her and get something new.

Seems like you have an emotional connection so I wouldn't let her go.

Just my 2c

My 2c worth...... if she is running well and you maintaining regularly then I dont see why you need to sell. Long run trips are way better than stop start stuff so in my view you should get many more kms from her.

Keep.....

Those motors prefer the long trips anyway

there's two things you need to do

1. keep the car
2. send us pics of her

Without knowing your financial situation, or the amount of work that the car needs its difficult to advise.

With that mileage, it is hard to imagine that you would get more than R50k for the car. If we assume a downside scenario of R40k, then you need ot ask yourself if you have enough cash to buy another car that is both reliable, and something that you can live with (so as to avoid financing another car). The other option is to keep the car, and to use what money you do have spare to fix the risk areas of the car. Again, we would need to analyse the service history of your car to assess what those risk areas are. Off the top of my head, here are some risk areas taht can leave you stranded:

Cooling system
Gearbox (if its auto)
Fuel Pump
Battery/alternator/voltage regulator
Old Belts
Power Steering Pump

Those are just a few that i could think of. Obviously if someone of these have been replaced recently, then the risk is less.

I budget R30 -40K on the risk parts. With that sorted i know she will give me more joy. And i just trust Gizmo for that TLC.

I have a Vw Tiguan on installments with the wife in the western cape. I was just considering something lighter on feul if my risk parts maintenance will lift my bill up to some new car with low km"s.

R3000 just for driving down and back takes a big bite out of my wallet now. On the other side after the maintenance she will be a lot more economical too.

Well, I have to say, a healthy 330i is pretty darn efficient on teh open road. Few cars are much more efficient.. so i wouldnt say thats a strong argument fo ra change.

Have you considered buying plane tickets on Khulula a month or 2 in advance?

I couldn't agree more. I have personally seen a 5 speed 330i beat a 1.5 Ford Kuga in average fuel consumption between Pretoria and Cape Town.....and the 330i was also driven much faster that the Kuga ;)

Travelling down to the Drakensberg I got as low as 6.3l/100km on my 5 speed 330i, not instantaneous, but average for the journey!

Flying from the Northern Cape Kathu, Kimberley or Upington is rather expensive. But currently looking at this option too. Even Bloemfontein airport will be an option if i can save a bit.

Thanks for the Comments guys. Will do a full cooling refresh with everything else that needs attention.

She need alot of attention but me and my wife are crazy over her.

I'm in the same boat as you buddy, in the last two months I've had to change my starter motor, radiator, fan belts, fuel tank and alternator. But I just do not want to let the car go.

Take the car to Gizmo, And then enjoy trouble free motoring with no installments.

Better the Devil you know than the devil you don't.

A well maintained car in good condition that's had preventative maintenance done to it and runs well .... Meh , Age and Mileage is nothing but a number ..

I say keep it .
