Welcome to the forum.
Please introduce yourself.

On the hard down shifts and upshifts it could well be that the cooling system on the box needs attention so do not just think that it is the solenoids and valve body.

Engine cutting out on idle could be vacuum related.
You would have to remmove the engine cover and check that the 3 vacuum pipes that run on the manifold are not punctured.

Also the vacuum pipe from the back of the manifold to the brake booster.

Equally check that the oil dipstick has a tight fit on the neck.

keep us posted.

Is there any way you could get to a scan tool? In my experience, there are a number of things that could lead to this. Could even be a crankshaft position sensor.

If you can give us with some fault codes it will be alot easier to narrow down the problem...

if I ma not wrong....the 540 has the same engine as my E38 740i

on my 740i I had exactly the same problem, and tried to diagnose the vacuum pipes as well....by listening and feeling for any obvious leaks, found a minor one where the pipes go into the brake-boost union.

I however also got advice somewhere....probably here on the forum that it could be Idle Solenoid valve or MAF.

So I disconnected the quick connector on the MAF

and up till now......no more engine dying whenever I stop at a robot or stop street.

so possibly try the MAF ??

Please elaborate on the crankshaft position sensor.
