Good morning fanatics. i need some advice, im currently looking at purchasing a 1997 e36 M3 3.2. The car itself is in mint condition except one big problem.... The engine needs to be replaced

The car is a bargain but what costs are you looking at when putting in a new engine?? and can you find these engines quite easily?

Thanks guys

where are you based? I presume you would want a 3.2 motor as well? These motors are pricey, and you can pay up to 30k + for a 3.2 m3 motor

a engine is going to be costly- i have seen a few engines for sale.

you basically buying the shell- unless they selling it for 15k-20k, i think you probably better off buying one with a running motor?

it would be easier to maintain a good running engine then try put in a motor that has no real guaranteed history that might need work anyway?

just my opinion.

What happened? Can it be fixed? Did you get a 2nd opinion?

i want to buy it from a guy, the car is immaculate. i would go as far as sayin its probaby the cleanest m3 body and interior wise i have seen in years !!!

These cars in good condition sell for about R100k and i can get it for R35k .... But, there is a hole in the block, so that means new engine.

So im confused... i think its a good deal?

Hole in the block does not always mean new engine, how is the head of the motor? and the rest of the rods and pistons? First try and go repair before you replace, it will cost you less. But that is just my 1c, I am budget all the way lol

well i always say a car is only worth what the individual is willing to pat for it, so if u really want it and u not going to use it everyday i dont see a problem with replacing the motor. here in durbs a lot of guys have replaced the engines and the car still runs fine. the trick here is when u fit the new engine is to do it properly with no short cuts and make sure its a decent engine.

A second hand motor for the 3.2l will cost you R32k- R35k, just for the motor and not labour to fit. You can call Boston Jap tech in The East Rand to confirm.
They give you a 7-10 day guarantee if i remember correctly.

When my motor had a bearing knock, i chose to rebuild the whole motor @ Savspeed, he is also in the East Rand, but it is going to cost you more than a replacement motor and mine was the 3.0l motor. He gave me a 20000km, 1year guarantee.

Dont take short cuts, if you rebuilding do the entire motor complete! or buy a running car.

Apart from the engine, what about other major things that need attention like suspension, gearbox, diff.....

Not trying to put you off buddy but the amount you gona spend might be more then you budget for

Shop around.
I know a complete rebuild of that motor is R60k.
I would source another block, or buy the e46 M3 motor that was advertised on the forum and whack it in ;) hehehe

a non- running car usually has more problems hidden. looking at the nature of the of the breakdown the engine suffered, you can imagine what was being done to it, how it was mantained etc. all in all go with your instincts. you would know other problems it had e.g what if the gearbox is on its way out?

Hmmmmmm if the car has really literally:thumbs: no work to be done to it and all you need to do to get the car running is drop a motor in, I would def say go for a 4 pipe motor :inlove::inlove:

S54 is not just drop in, there is alot of electrical work that needs to be done to make it work. Unless its a track car.
