Hi guys

So with all this car restoring going on,I have been looking for a decent classic to buy and restore. My main priorities are licensed (with all papers) and running. So I think I may potentially have found one. It's a 1977 E12 528, but the owner says there's an issue with the gearbox (it's an auto). My question is,how much would a gearbox overhaul cost or how much would it cost to replace?

Any advice is welcome.

Thanks!

Where are you located? Maybe give BeMoW a call in Pretoria - they can advise on which newer gearboxes will work well on that car.

There is also a place called Dolphin Spares in the next street from BeMoW.

Or, maybe go for a manual conversion! :fencelook: The 528 motor with a great 5 speed manual is going to sound great and drive like a dream!

BTW, I have seen an E12 lying in Kwaggasrand, Pretoria, across the power station cooling towers, at a scrapyard - not sure if the 'box is ok.

Good luck - how about some pictures of your car

Thanks for the info prado! I actually don't own it.... YET. It's for sale and has everything in order except for the issue with the gearbox. I am hoping to get some sort of figures so I can find out if the car is worth buying. The car is DIRT cheap (don't think the owner knows what he has!LOL!) but there is the gearbox issue.

Hi guys,so just an update on this gearbox issue. The owner tells me that apparently it will go into reverse, but won't select forward gears. He also says that he has phoned around and is told it is something relatively small and inexpensive to repair. I would like to go and see the car,any idea what the issue could be? I am not so clued up on auto boxes so not sure what the issue might be. I will take some photos when I see it and post here.
