Hey guys,

Anybody made the jump from 1080p to 1440p? Is there is a massive difference?

Just upgraded to a GTX 1080 so thinking about getting a better monitor.

My current monitor is 60hz so a move to 1080p 144hz would also be an option...

Any suggestions?

1440p is a MASSIVE difference in image quality as its a hell of allot more pixels.

Im using a 4k tv as a monitor at home on my home pc and its heaven, and for work I am using a 4k monitor and its heaven.

For gaming however if the screen is im guessing a 27 or 28 inch then 1440p is best as 4k on a 27/28 inch monitor is terrible for normal use like web browsing or general use. It will cause excess eye strain. I think with regards to a 4k monitor for general use and work use graphic design or 3d animation or video editing etc 40 - 50 inch is perfect as it basically equates to looking at a FHD monitor of 27inches, text and icons will be around the same size.

so if its gaming your after and you want a "monitor" then 1440p at 144hz is your best option as you get the resolution bump which means smaller pixels and more of them plus you get the refresh rate bump which is amazing!

144hz
In my opinion more frames are better than a bigger resolution. I play more FPS games so it benefits me more. If you into RPG and games that focus on the environment 1440p or 4k would be the way to go.

But if you can get a 1440p, 144hz that would be the best of all worlds :smilebounce:

Budget? If it's a normal 4-5k budget, get a 24 inch 144hz. If you've got 10k, get a 35 inch 144hz screen. Evetech has some monitors in that range of size and price.

24 inch monitor.........May as well play games on your cellphone screen or tablet or calculator screen!

I would rather go for a bigger monitor for gaming thanks. 27inch being the absolute smallest. you can find some good deals go look on carbonite.

I gamed for years on a 1080p 24 inch. If you dont know what going bigger is like, there's nothing wrong with that actually. But yes, then I picked up a 27 inch on Carb for a song. Life changing! Sooo much real estate!

Really depends on the games the lad is playing - if he's into FPS games then anything over 24 inch is not needed. 90% of CSGO pros, for instance, play on 24 inch screens. If you're going to be playing more turn based stuff then go bigger. But for action games more real estate is not always positive - you don't want to have too much information coming at you - rather refresh rate and clarity are important.

same amount of info is coming at you. your seeing the exact same pic!
24inch monitors are a thing of the past just like 17inch crt monitors are a thing of the past when they were once the boss of the monitor world.

27inch and up is where its at these days and the thing is, After playing a game on a bigger better screen going back to a tiny 24 inch or 27 inch monitor feels terrible.

Then going HDR is an even bigger step in the monitor evolutionary stage that is very difficult to come back from.

This is the nature of the tech world, yes a 24 inch monitor does the job just like a citi golf does the job of getting you to work and back, but you would prefer a BMW, and once you have driven a bmw try go back to driving a citi golf to work and back ;)

for the record I play allot of FPS games and I play them on a 55inch HDR 4k TV and have zero issues :)

I mean, if 90+% of CSGO pros run on 24inch screens I'm going to say that they're doing it for a reason. At that size your eyes can take all the information on the screen in without requiring extra effort.

I don't doubt that you CAN play CSGO and other FPS' on a large screen, but that isn't the question - the question is what is most fit for purpose. I'd be confident that equal skill, a player on a 24inch 144hz would wipe the floor in 1v1 quake against a player with a 55inch 60hz screen.

As I say, it depends on what he's playing, if it's FPS/competitive action games, then 24-27 with 144hz (though given his budget, he'll only be able to afford a 24 at 144hz). If he's rocking largely slower RTS or stuff like CIV or RPG games, then he could go for a higher res, low refresh rate monitor in larger size.

Ag CSGO is such an old game its not something I even consider anymore, its an eye sore of a game for me so I guess if you playing a game that old and bad looking a 24 inch monitor will do the trick.

I recently started working for a game design company this year january and we have a box full of old Samsung 24inch monitors at work that we no longer use cause games just look crap on them, No real estate and you Just can't take advantage of the beautiful lighting and detail we put into a level as its basically like looking at a cellphone screen in Today's standards of gaming.

Games have evolved and we are years ahead of games like CS with regards to visual detail, Take quake champions for instance, the game is visually gorgeous yet its extremely fast paced and accurate, if you watch the quake championships online you will see them using 28" monitors.

Look all these monitors and tech have there place, if the guy is 100% looking to only play a old game like CSGO then cool get an old monitor off carbonite you can probably pick up an old 24" 144hz monitor for next to nothing.

I am not dissing the game, its a good game and allot of people are still playing it on a daily basis and taking it to a competitive level, its just really old now and the graphics are very old school half life 2 type of graphics.

Are you sure you even know what CS GO is? The GFX are great. Its not an old game. If you are maybe thinking about CS 1.6, or CS Source then maybe i would agree with you.

They have kept 24" and standardized it at pro level because most of the pro's came from CS before CS GO where 27" monitors weren't really a thing yet. Besides, most pro's play on crazy resolutions so 24" vs 27" wouldnt make a difference to them.

144hz will change your gaming experience dramatically.

Your 1080 will manage 144hz 1440p without a problem. Will look amaze! Oh and just to add, go 144hz before 1440p. 144hz is THAT much of a difference. If you can afford a screen that can do both, then shew bobs your uncle.

haha of course I know what CS GO is I have played it allot in the past, the graphics were a big step from cs and cs source but compared to games like quake champions its a decade behind. Like I said its a good game and it has its place but I am not a CS GO only gamer, I play allot of games and I am a 3d animator and game environment and lighting artist so for me to look at a game like CS GO when games like quake champions and hell blade exist and tomb raider etc CS GO is just an eye sore for me.

Its a competitive FPS that people keep playing because its game mechanics are very well designed. It's also very fun to play at a lan still.

Play Doom 2017 on a 24 inch monitor and then play it on a 4k HDR 55" TV and you will understand how good a game can look and feel and will have a better understanding of where I am coming from. To some people graphics and the experience of a game mean more than just pure game play.

But we are all different this is why on a forum we can discuss these things and give the pros and cons of each, its not to say who is right and who is wrong. There is no right answer here, there is only personal preference.

Aight fam, I dont get the CS GO thing but will leave it at that.

Also i agree with you on the 24" vs the 55". Cause i can relate...

You see cause chicks always say my willy looks much better on a 55" tv cause they can barely see it on the 24" pc screen when i send pics.
