1400 Km's with an E39 M5

So the last few days I was down at the coast, and of course decided that I was going to drive my beast down... All I can say is what a car.

I am a responsible daddy so I mostly stuck to the speed limit, if it said 100, I did 100....

During that distance, I mainly used the speedo cruiser which is super responsive. I assume the E39 has the electronic speedo cruise as apposed to the cable system in previous cars.

Seats
The seats are not that comfortable long distance, they are hard and sporty, and not suited for long distance, but keep in mind the type of car it is, and what it was designed for.

Fuel Tank/Consumption
The 65 litre tank is annoying, it really is. Again I understand it is an M division car, and as such the tank size is reduced due to weight and exhaust boxes, but its still annoying.

However, to my shock, I managed to get 11l/100 on a race tuned 5 litre V8 with 8 individual throttle bodies. That is just frikken amazing.

I even got it down to like 9.5 over PieterMaritzburg over the down hills.

Car itself
THis car is phenominal, and surpases everything I expected, even if it is 11 years old with a quirk list as long as my arm the handling, power and overall ride is incredible.

Keeping in mind that I replaced the clutch the week before we went down, I did not really push the car, so I did not experiance "coast power" all that often, but that 6th gear can take you from 125 to 180 in seconds, I never needed to gear down, not even once. So it can be considered better then an auto in my view.

Anyway, the bitch list that I have is not the cars fault, its designed as a sports car, which means sporty everything, although it does balance out, and its not as painful as say a WRX, which used as a daily drive is horrid if your not doing 1000 to 6000 rpm in every gear all day long.

So my conclusion is that I need to get another E39 540 or maybe even an E60 550 in the very near future....

Anyway,

E39 M5 FTW :thinker:

I'm surprised to hear about the seats. I really didn't think they would be that hard.

After a week since I bought the 540i and driving in town only I thought the harder suspension and sport seats might become a bit much, but we went to visit some family over the long weekend in April and the car just destroyed the distance even though I kept to the speed limit. It was only 250km (one way), but I wasn't tired or sore in any way or form. The only time I geared down was when I had to pass someone while going uphill. On a flat road or downhill I just put my foot down and she pulls lovely from 2000rpm in 6th gear.

I now know exactly what Jeremy Clarkson means when he says a car "eats up the miles". It's fantastic :):)
