13.2 at Tarlton

Well I ran that time twice in my manual 335. Once when it was bone stock. I had it less than a week I think in May 2007. There was no Procede in those days in SA, there was no Juice box as that company started in 2008, there were no flash tunes. Bone stock on runflats. Ran 13.6, 13.5, 13.3, 13.2, 13.2. Me and my bra Gert were going off the hook with excitement everytime the ET dropped. I think the best exits were 167, but it was a freezing day, -1deg at times. I have all the pics, etc.

Then a long time later I ran 13.2 again, but fully modded. My best exit was 182. Amazing to think a car with so much more mods & power ran the same time as stock. Albeit the exit was much higher. Obviously a modded manual is so much harder to run a time with due to traction issues. 2nd gear was a joke. No LSD really is a hindrance when you have loads of torque.

But I found in stock form, it had just enough torque & launches pretty well. Also recall running at Hillfox when it was stock & it launched like a demon. Chipping it just ruined the delivery & made the launch a frustrating hit 'n miss affair.

But yeah, 13.2 stock is what I ran I & I rate that shows the manual is not a bad launcher in stock form. Who wants to discuss the time & what mods it had? BTW the answer is it was stock.

This is a brilliant write up, I have software done and the last dyno showed 529 nm- yet I run 13.7 or worse. I end up spinning insanely on a launch and lots of guys on the track tell me there must be something wrong, my answer is always that the issue is btw steering and seat ( driver). So how does one overcome the launch issues?

Was run at Tarlton when the car was a week old & bone stock. Long before some of the piggyback companies even opened.

Pics taken May 24th 2007. Runflats & temp plates on, which means that it was taken with the 1st week of ownership as I changed both those shortly afterwards.

Sherwin, a very good and informative write up.

I remember those days all too well and "hated" you for it...hehee...was following each of your runs, vids & exploits at the time. Thinking back, one had to rely much on driver skill and "learn" the abilities of the 335 without any "modding" aids. I recall how frustrating it was that I could never get the bone stock car under 6 seconds (at the coast & autobox) from 0 - 100km/ph, but when I gave the car to Zaid @ zeemax, he made it look so easy, with just shy under 5 seconds. :joy:

I remember the thread on Cartoday.com forum
'335 runs 13.2 @ Tarlton'
:=):

Yeah there were plenty guys from the forums there that day. I still think a stock car has the perfect amount of torque to launch without LSD.

Yeah I think when they both stock the manual is a bit easier to run a time with as you can launch harder & "feather" a bit to leave the line in the meat of the torque with minimal wheelspin. When they both modded, then the auto is the way to go.

Then a long time later I ran 13.2 again, but fully modded. My best exit was 182. Sherwin you said fully modded please if you don't mined tell me what is fully modded meen in your words? is this bigger turbo's ,chip, full exhaust, intercooler, air induction, octane booster and 105 race juice with tommy heels on the wheels?
The only reason i am asking is that i have been many times at tarlton but never seen a 135i or a 335i doing exit speeds more then 172kmh with 13.5 not to mention breaking the 12s line..

Fully modded I mean I had:

  • Chip
  • Full exhaust
  • Catless downpipes
  • Spearco Intercooler
  • Dual cone intake
  • Water/Meth injection

And yet I ran the same time as stock. All due to traction. If I superimpose the Vbox grafts of the stock 13.2 & the fulled modded 13.2, I lost at least 0.4 seconds in the 60ft. The modded 60ft was 2.3 or higher, even with semi's. And then through 2nd gear the stock car pulls away another 2 cars, as the modded car feels like you driving on ice in 2nd gear while the stock car accelerates with no issues. So at the 200m mark the stock car is like 4-5 cars ahead. And then you only have 3rd gear when the modded car starts to haul & it closes a full 4 car gap to cross the line at the same time.

There have been plenty cars running 12's at Tarlton, I know of 4 of our cars that did it, Voodoo did it with software only. His best trap was 178 that day.

DCT is a much, much better box than the auto. So much crisper, slicker & quicker. However, for drah racing the auto is king. Torque braking off the line is something straight out of Drag Racing 101.

Anything but drag racing & the DCT is king.

The best combo is the twin-turbo engine with the DCT box. Like this Z4 3.5iS. Got the 250kw engine from the 1M & the DCT box. And a really sporty exhaust note. Awesome package.

Just to illustrate how the torque ruins the launch capability, look at the torque gain of the Z4. And this is over a car that came with a factory over-boost feature.

Is this times then on a preped track, coz Friday nights its not and sorry forgot to add that. But if so, then is it fear to say that on a prep track you can take 0.5sec of from a non prep track or what ?

Voodoo ran 12.9 on an unprepped track during the day. At night that's at least 0.3 slower due to traction.

Goodluck with your mods. What solution did you opt for?
What are the planned mods to break the 400whp mark?
