1 Series's... talk to me

Gents,

I wanna change my wifes car, and I recon a 4 door 1 series could be the ticket.

SHe currently drives a Golf 5 2.0 Sportline (6 speed manual) and loves this car, but I just cant bring myself to like it.

I am considering trading in her Golf (almost paid for) and my 7 series in at a dealer, buying the 1 series cash or finance over like a year, so I can build up a deposit for my next car (which will be some loud 5 series)

So... talk to me.

I am looking for something reliable, does not have to have 500Nm+, whats the 120/120d's going for in good condition with about 75,000 on the clock.

Fuel consumption is an issue for her

How is the one series with children, enough space, boot big enough, should I look at the equiv E90 ?

WHats the hijack risk on the 1 vs the equiv 3.

Good idea, bad idea ?

Was considering the equiv X3 as well, but that may be a bit too big.

1 series have no rear leg room and you will struggle to get an average sized dead body in the boot, even with lots of force.

Fuel consumption is AWESOME, from the bit of reading I've done - but that was more about the 320d, so the 120d might even be better. 2008 32d with +-50k on the clock can be had for R220k, and the 120d seems to go for +- the same price but with more mileage on. I don't know why I'm even telling you this, cause you know carfind

So do I understand your view is that there is better value in the 3 then the 1 ? If so, I tend to agree with this.

How does the 1 interior compare (in terms of size only) to that of a mini, rumour is that they share a chassis...

Not sure about the chassis sharing , but I don't think it's impossible, the 1'er is REALLY small inside, but then again the mini is tiny but for a city runaround with great consumption and oomph it's a great all rounder.

My first choice would be the 320d, I think it's a way better looking car, more practical and better value for money second hand. I think there's great deals to be had with 320d, there's literally hundreds available.

go for a nice second hand 3 series, maybe even look at a 323/325i, they not that bad on feul consumtion.

How old are the kids?

My car was initially my boets, until he had twins. In order for the rear-facing baby seats to fit in, the back rests of the front seats had to be bolt upright, and the seats moved all the way forwards. It was physically impossible for him to drive the car.

From my experience, the rear can be difficult to get in and out of. Once you're in though, there is sufficient headroom, and ok leg room if front passengers move forward. If you only need space in the front, then there is plenty. [I'm 1.92m tall, so my comments have some legit value ]

It really is a lekker little car, but if you have a family, I'd rather recommend a 3-series. Also more boot space, the 1er isn't happy being filled with prams and kids stuff hehe.

Economy wise, BMW make good motors. It can vary from about 5l/100km in the 120d to 10l/100km in the 130i :thumb:

Why does the 1 series hatch have so little space in the back? My coupe is pretty comfy in the back - it's just getting in and out that's the problem (and headroom if you're very tall).

The hatch has more leg room than the coupe
And a baby seat fits fine in the hatch
U guys must be some big fellas

In fact, if the golf was fine in terms of space, then the 1 series hatch is better

As far as I know the 1 series has a very similar chassis to the e46 so I would guess it would be more or less the same size inside... Sure the e90 will be bigger but I would go for the 1 series because I feel it would be big enough

This does actually make perfect sense, and its actually a good looking comfortable car.

The only thing that bugs me about it, I know if something goes wrong on a BMW, I could fix it, every time I work on the Golf, I want to murder something.

And the golf has got an airbag light on again, I suppose its now the other seat where the cable has broken.

It also throws a coolant low warning level when the car is ice cold, and you turn it on for the first time. Coolant level is perfect, car does not overheat, Start it for a second time no warning.

I also need to get hold of a CAN based version of Ross-tech, bleh, see a BMW I would have all the tools to do this no problem...

ZL, I have to agree with MikeR.

After seeing what you can get for R220-240k I'd much rather consider the 320d, way more practical than 120d in every way, but only if you have to buy, otherwise keep the golf.

I vote for the 320d, a mate has the 1 series and she isn`t comfy, not to my liking anyway

Not too sure on the hijack risks of either but there was a guy who's 1 series was stolen down the road from me so that's the only case of theft I can think of... But if its a popular beemer there'll b people stealing them unfortunately...

2. But if you must go for the 320d.
3. If it is just for 2 adults and a child take the 120d
4. fuel consumption on the 120d (with a chip) is simply amazing...nothing more to add.:thumbsup:

Problem solved. Its fun, spacious has a larger boot then the one series and more toys standard. Its unique and out the bos is a very quick car whilst still averaging 550km from a 50 litre tank and 600km on the long road.

Makes sense? Also... Clubmans are going very cheap at the moment. So snatch a bargain.

I know you can't compare the 116 to a 120/120d, but my wife test drove the 116, and she said it feels the same as her Tazz??? From a womens point of view, use it don't use it???

Mike's right Clubman is the way But a 130i 3-Door is also a good car
