'04 320d Remote start and shut down

Is it something worth doing?

My main concern is the shut down period and the concern stems for the turbo naturally.

I've just had a new turbo fitted, so would want to get the best mileage possible out of it.

I work weird shifts and like this morning am up by 05:20.

I thought it would be nifty to be able to switch the car on from the kitchen while getting some coffee and letting it idle a bit.

I know of a guy on the mybb forums that can do this kind of thing, but wanted to know how it impact on Motorplan and more importantly if it is something feasible and agreeable for the car.

Your input would be greatly appreciated.

Slightly off the point, but I found that when I let my 320d idle for 10minutes to let the engine warm up, the EGR valve acts up and doesn't close. You then end up with a trail of SMOKE and have to turn off the ignition anyway to reset it.

As for the practice of letting the car idle beforehand, it's good, but ONLY for the engine. The gearbox, diff and wheels(bearings), still have to be run slowly for a while to give it chance to heat up too. By that time the engine should be up to temp too.

It's always a debate about the warm-up idling, but either way, I am all for it.

And a point about the remote start. Have you got a manual or auto? Either way, a check switch may be added to make sure the car is in neutral before it will start up. (You don't want to run after the car halfway down the street with half a cup of coffee...)

BMW will most likely have a word to say if something electronically goes wrong with your car under motorplan. (Even if it's a tail light fusing...)

How far have you got to go with m/plan?

I have never warm up idled my car, my car gets warmed up under load with full oil pressure like it should be.

The only thing that you need to do on that 320d to maintain the turbo, is to let the car idle for 2mins or so just to let the turbo cool down after driving long roads etc

Thanks for the feedback.

And I've got the Auto Hellas.
LoL @ the chasing after the car theory :)

On the Motorplan, called them yesterday and was given an amount of R13k for one year or 15000kms.

Bro, put the R13K in a bank account and save it! You'll still have most of it at the end of the year. BMW diesels do not give that much trouble and does not cost R13K a year to maintain! BMW will take your cash and laugh all the way to the bank....
