E90 - Vibration Damper Pulley Query
#1
Hi Guys

I would like to find out if the Vibration damper pulley is starting to fail, will it cause a vibration?

Im driving a 2010 320d, and from about 5k km ago, i get vibrations between 1500rpm and 2000rpm, through all the gears. No vibration before that and no vibration after that. Its not a hectic vibration, but its clearly significant when there, it feels more intense when under load(uphill) in 3rd,4th,5th gear in that rpm range.

Under full throttle i don't feel it.

I ruled out Tyre and rim vibration - i assumed it was either motor or drive-train related(mountings). No im thinking it could be vibration pulley damper. The car is on 144000km, which is about the general failure point of the pulley.

Visual inspection on pulleys seems fine.

Dont want to spend unnecessary money.

Thanks guys

So you have a few possibilities
1)Propshaft guibo
2) Propshaft carrier bearing
3)Engine mounts
4) Gearbox mounts
5)Rear diff mount

My money is on engine mounts or gearbox mounts

Hi Guys

Thanks for the feedback.

Eish i was hoping it might be the pulley, so that will be a easier fix than the doing the rest of the mounts.

But i guess i will have to start with the mounts.

I was reading a old post, from i think 2018 yesterday, on this forum- with exact same symptoms as mine, but saying that vibration only came after SW. I also done SW on my car. But i think the vibration was there from before, it just became more pronounced after the SW.

can anyone guide me, on the exact number of mountings i should look at.

Thanks again everyone who posted!

Given your mileage, start with engine and gearbox box mounts, Meyle or Febi bilstein from Goldwagen are good options. And the pretty cheap last time I priced them for an E90 330d it came to around R2500 for engine and gearbox mounts

Cool - thanks a lot. I just sent Goldwagen an email.
The quoted me R3900 for damper pulley, but forgot to add the mounts in the quote.

Personally I would go for the pulley from the agents. The current OEM pulley has done 140K, is there any guarantee the one from GW will do the same..? What brand is it?

I paid R4.2k with the bolts, on special from ABM.. I would rather pay a little more for peace of mind and to save in the long run, in this case roughly 10% more..

If the difference in cost is 100%, it changes the equation.. My 2c.

Dont go for a non oem pulley please. That's the one thing I strictly suggest OEM for

Thanks Nikhil - GW got back to me - Benoni - they want R1675 per engine mount and R575 per gearbox mount. Damn that seems more expensive than i anticipated.

Thanks KPM... when i change the pulley, i will go ABM. requested a quote from GW, will just wait for pricing now.

+1 on that. Had exactly the same issue on my 320d. Replacing Carrier bearing and guibo fixed it for me. Might be worth while looking at prop balancing as well? Mine had about the double the mileage though, but balancing made everything silky smooth again.

A friend has a 1999 328i auto which had a small vibration when accelerating normally. I took a chance and replaced the gearbox mountings (cheap and easy fix) and viola!, no more vibrations. I would suggest start with the gearbox mounts. Car in question has on 300k kms now. This was when it had on about 270k kms.

Your mounts look fine and the damper pulley looks OKAY for now but will need replacing soonish. Is it a auto or manual?

Only seeing these pics now Gearbox mounts are fine, Guibo and crank pulley are a little brittle but not critical right now, your issue is engine mount related
