Which oil for 320D E90? (N47)
Hey all,

So just took delivery of my 2010 320D, want to do a service on her as she is due for one (151k KM on the clock).

I am a bit confused with regards to what is the correct oil, I see people were recommending Liqui Molly Toptec 4100 but that is 5W 40, I found another site which recommends the Liqui Moly Toptec 4605 but that is 5W 30 and is cheaper. Not sure if that is the only difference between those 2 oils?

BMW seem to use Shell oil according to the quote I got from them - not cheap for 6L of oil too. I see some members recommend Shell HX 7 but I can only seem to find it as 5 W30 or 10 W40.

So now the main question is, what is the better oil to use?
5W 30 or 5 W40? I think 10 W 40 is a bit too thick and may not provide the best protection upon start up?

Would like to try get the parts and oil this weekend or early next week.
I am considering the Liqui Molly Toptec 4605 due to the price compared to the 4100.

Thank you!

I've been using Helix Ultra on mine 5W40. It's just a higher viscosity than the 5W30. Both are fine for the car AFAIK.

Currently using Liquimoly TopTec 4605 (5w30) in my 20d.. BMW spec oil is 5w30, but you can use 5w40 if you prefer, either or..

I use Shell Helix Utra 5w40 in my 30i. Just don't stick to the stupid intervals, every 10k or less is better for motor longevity.

Thanks guys, that helps.

Was speaking to a friend and he got 5L of "Mercedes: oil for his C220 Bluetec (diesel) for R380 incl VAT and it's also 5W 30 so considering maybe using this?

Any reason why it may not be a good idea? I Assume it's also probably made by Shell, Castrol or another company and just has a Mercedes sticker slapped onto it - like the BMW oil?

Priced pretty well, if it's a big no-no, then I will probably go with the Liqui Molly Toptec 4605

Maybe just check who the manufacturer is. Castrol got a bad rep with causing sludge but it may have been a few cases and they were shunned, I don't know the details it's just what I have been told.

I personally stick to Shell (Helix or the BMW oil) or LM if I come across it when parts shopping for services.

Also saw the same price on oil when I took the Merc in for a service the other day.. Was surprised that its cheaper than most other brands.

Remember you will need a bit more than 5l.

Yipp, that's the stuff.
Not sure who make it, tried to Google but couldn't find out. Nobody seems to know.

I believe the 320D with the N47 engine is takes 5.2L when replacing the oil filter too

Stick to 5W30

Go to Goldwagen- they sell original BMW 5w30 way cheaper than at BMW them selves. Must be the Diesel one though. if they don't have then go Liqui Moly. Pricey but worth it.

you will need 6 small bottles

I’ve just paid R173 per liter for BMW oil for my 120d. Go figure

You need LL01 if you dont have a DPF or LL04 if you have a DPF. As simple as that

I isn't quite "as simple as that". Guys usually have brand preferences for a reason due to bad experience with a certain manufacturer.

Castrol has LL-01 approved oil and has quite a bad rep for causing sludge on most cars. I would personally never spend my money on any Castrol product

RE: Which oil for 320D E90? (N47)
No....the reason castrol has a bad rep is because the service intervals when using it was way too long in between. It is as simple as LL01 and LL04 unless you can prove me different. I have researched this to death and for daily normal traffic use use the manufacturer's spec (ll01 / ll04) and change your oil every year or every 10 000km whichever comes first. Happy motoring.

Helix Ultra!! Always Helix Ultra!!

Gather around kids, it's story time... I had my E46 330 ported and polished and refreshed at about 180k on the clock, been using helix ultra since I got the car when it was on 80k. Mechanic sent me photos of clean the inside of the motor was, I was frikkin amazed and he was very nonchalant about it, he said, well that's what helix ultra does. As soon as my 640d 's plan ends I'm changing to helix ultra.

My 2011 e90 320d has been getting Shell Helix Ultra since 110k km's. It's now on 171k km's and running smooth. Never had issues.

Alright, so a bit of a silly question perhaps.

Helix Ultra is the same as Helix RX7?
Where can I purchase Shell Helix Ultra from? Which place would have preferable prices on the Helix Ultra?

@KPM_330 it is coming! With the rain I have not had a chance to take pictures yet.
