octo  Corona hits SA
Figured it was inevitable... I am just curious about what is going to happen next. Fencelook

Let's be realistic. The media is blowing this whole thing out of proportion. Understandably there are thousands dead but nobody is reporting on how many have actually been cured with minimal treatment. The cured vastly outnumbers the dead.

Statistically, so far it is only affecting poor immune systems. So mainly younglings and older people. But then also a cause for concern for people living with HIV (and our country has a very large number of those).

So what do you guys think? I'm on the fence wondering whether it's really going to do anything if it spreads or whether people are going to go into complete anarchy because they are stupid... and this is my only fear. People that aren't affected by it will basically be inconvenienced by the people that lose their minds and go into complete disarray, and we all know how easily buildings can be burnt down because people are unhappy...

Some people don't ride because they want to live. I ride because I want to live a little more...

Hey Fanatics. This is very very close to home. The first confirmed case is a parent at the school where my son goes. The 2 kids have now been confirmed as infected. The younger kid is in my son's grade RR class.

We have taken the decision to self isolate and keep a very close watch for any symptoms. To say I'm concerned is an understatement.

RE: Corona hits SA
It's Cowan House school in Hilton. What is really getting to me is the lack of clarity from the school. Some reports say the kids have not been at school this week yet there's no confirmation from the school. They know of course from the attendance registers so why then the secrecy.

We've just been told that school is closed tomorrow. That is a confirmation of sorts.

I go cold when a picture of the family is put on social media and my 4yr old sees the pi of the on my wife's phone and says "that's my friend Peter"... So if the kid WAS at school my son has had contact.

I don't panic but I also don't like uncertainty.

It's best that the kids and parents from that school get tested asap and take the necessary precautions.
This could spread fast especially if it's a school.

Another thing to make mention, I'm from a medical background.
The only mask at this stage would help is a N95 mask made by 3M.
Those paper masks 1-3 ply won't help you from contracting the virus. besides being flimsy it doesn't seal the entire nose and mouth.
I see people that are selling those paper masks in excess of 40x their original price now.
From what I've read, there's only 1% of N95 masks that are currently meeting the supply needs Globally.

I understand your concern. But also just to put your mind at ease you must remember that this is no worse than a normal flu. I'm sure you and your family (and the affected) will be just fine.

Keep us posted. Thumb

RE: Corona hits SA
Hi All,

My advice is to read stats/articles from CDC and WHO.
News companies are creating more panic.
The only news outlet that has more unbiased information than the rest is the BBC.

Some quick snippets that I picked up on my research:

- Kids are least likely to be badly affected. Most kids under 12 handle it like the normal flu.
- Older people (over 60) are most likely to be affected badly. Mainly due to weakened immunity.
- All people (kids and adults of all ages) who currently have any respiratory issue or are diabetic, have heart disease, chronic hypertension, etc. are likely to be badly affected.
- Most of the Wuhan fatalities were either old people or those who already had lung issues (note that smoking in China is very rife).
- Some people may be unaffected (due to their better immunity), BUT they may still be able to either show symptoms much later (though, not very badly affected) OR be silent carriers of the virus.
- Anti-bacterial hand sanitzers are not effective! - this is a VIRUS, not a BACTERIA. Handwashing is still the best. If no water, then use an alcohol based santizer of above 65%.
- Rule #1 - don't touch your face
