The Italian Side Chick

To a degree, we are all influenced by what we see on the media.

For us petrolheads, it’s usually the shows like Top Gear that stick with us (The proper Top Gear). As a teenager religiously watching, and re-watching, every episode on a Saturday morning, I was always intrigued by Jeremy Clarkson’s emotional connection with Alfa Romeos. I could never really understand what the attraction was. They were never the fastest, mostly FWD and had a stigma for being unreliable and dropping in value like crazy…

This was never something I really wished to explore, apart from drooling over every GTV 6 I saw. We have had a few Alfas owned by family members (my dad owned a GTV, uncle owned an older Guilietta and a Junior). They were cool, but I just never appreciated them… High school was all about trump cards and Alfas never came up tops.

Fast forward to last week, casually browsing the classifieds when I came across a GT 3.2 that I could not get over. I arranged a viewing and the rest is history. Maybe it comes with age, but I can’t believe I haven’t owned one earlier, there is something undescribable about driving this car. Everything is mechanical and connected giving you what modern cars lack… The ultimate feeling of control.

I now completely understand the below extract from Top Gear, where Jeremy reviewed a MiTo back in 2008.

“However.....I have argued many times that owning an Alfa is a portal through which all petrolheads must pass if they genuinely want to know what it is that differentiates a car from a toaster or a washing machine.

Because Alfas have flaws, they feel human, as if they have a soul and a temper. Each one is like the tortured hero of a Russian novel, a car of extraordinary depths, a car you can never truly fathom, especially when it four in the morning and it is enveloped in a cloud of steam, yet again, on the North Circular.

They are like cocaine. The unimaginable highs are always matched by immense, brooding lows. Massive electrical storm that inevitably follow a glorious sultry evening.

But the thing that I love most about this car is that, at parties, when people ask what you're driving, you can say, "An Alfa."

Men will imagine that you are a grand-prix racer from the fifties. Women will think that you bit like the Daniel Day Lewis character from 'A Room with a View'. A bit interesting. It is the only brand in the world of sub-supercar motoring that can do this.”

I have owned and driven many cars, so I would hope my opinion would hold some merit.

Is that a zender front bumper?

Looks ace - these are a really good deal, your up front maintenance on the v6 is a big mission, but once that's done it's a relatively reliable beast.

A good deal too, you can pick one up for the R100k mark nowadays.

Hope you enjoy it!

Congrats on the new ride. Those 3.2s sound glorious, and to open the bonnet to admire the polished inlet is an event in itself.

I'm also keen to hear whether Alfa ownership is cheaper than M ownership, LOL
