M2 Comp vs F80 M3 vs AMG GT
Hi Guys,

After seeing the thread "G20 M340i vs F80 M3 CP", It inspired me to post this.

SO the M2 is a new car, The F80 M3 a 1 or 2 year old used example(probably a CP) and the wildcard is a 2015/2016 AMG GT.

All the cars are between 1mil and 1.3mil.
The M2 and M3 share the S55 engine, albeit a detuned version for the M2.The AMG has a 4l twin turbo v8.

Another thing of note is the AMG has a 6 year MP and the examples in the used market are low mileage.

Opinions ?

RE: M2 Comp vs F80 M3 vs AMG GT
If you really want to know the truth, these cars are all going to be inferior to a newish turbo 911 if you're spending this much anyway... and if you want something hardcore you're going to have to look higher up in the food chain of each brand or something different.

Out of this comparison, it is the AMG GT IMHO as it looks unbelievable, has an incredible interior, makes all the right noises etc as a car should that was over double the price of the BMWs new.... can be tuned further... and has depreciated like a stone. I am hoping the same happens with the M8.

Great time to be a used car buyer.

Not a big fan of porsche and AFAIK you can only really get a Carrera T or base Carrera for approx 1.3mil. Unless you go for a Cayman gts which lacks power.

But yeah. The AMG is so much car for the money. Plus that engine is all across the range in the E63 and GLE etc. So it is fairly reliable.

I’d also go for the AMG GT. The sound of that glorious V8 is worth the price alone. I saw a video of how much time AMG spend in getting the right sounds out of their exhaust systems. For example 7 slats vs 9 slats makes a big difference. It is that incredible attention to detail that is to be admired. No need for aftermarket exhaust systems unlike M cars. From a resale point of view the AMG will also hold its value better.

It is indeed a great time to be in the used performance car market. The first owners have taken a hiding on depreciation and the 2nd owner onwards gets the benefits of value for money.

The AMG GT. Just note that Merc changed their MP to 5 years recently so just check.

In a perfect world, where roads are smooth and well maintained, any of these cars will do.

In the real SA world, GLC63s AMG or X3M or F Pace SVR...

Cayman GT4 for me is I was splashing this much.

That being said. There are loooooots of options out there if you have 1.3mil to spend.

M3/4 CP gets my vote. Take it from me I have a 335i and my next BMW is a M not even looking at the M340i as an option due to the price point/power ratio. That said there are some interesting cars available at that price point...

This was one of the more disappointing cars I drove recently (the 911T being the most disappointing I've driven in recent memory)... it makes an amazing sound and is a great car for sure (you could EASILY daily drive it) but there is nothing hardcore about it that makes that GT badge fit IMHO. It is supposed to be the 'cayman that everyone was hoping for' with 'GT3 suspension' and 'the one Porsche finally had the guts to make better than the 911'... it was none of these things and Porsche owners love to believe marketing and PR as much as Apple folks. Track use maybe but you want something that makes your hands tremble as you get out after a spirited drive and this was not it. You may not even break into a sweat.

The effects of altitude made a big difference to my experience I am sure but its one of those that you think you would buy until you actually have the money and actually go to drive it... by which point a used GTS makes more sense than the neither-here-nor-there GT4... and you save up until your peasant bank-balance can afford a real GT3 RS (which is everything the marketing and PR machine claims it is AND MORE!)

It also has a stupid auto-rev-match system that the Porsche dude said couldn't be deactivated in sport mode... but could in normal modes... This led to my rant elsewhere about people deluding themselves into thinking this damped, engineered 'experience' is pure in anyway because a car has a third pedal and a stick...

Get a V10 Audi R8 or older Gallardo.

Sure you'll cry like a little girl when it needs a service or repairs, but you'll forget all that when you drive it again....

I haven’t test driven one so I would have to take your word for it. If that’s the case then I probably wouldn’t like it.

My F80 M3 always gives me a work out when I drive it on the ragged edge. There are often times I climb out of it with a huge grin and my hands trembling. However, I’m sure if I had 1.3 id be able to find an alternative that’s even more thrilling.

RE: M2 Comp vs F80 M3 vs AMG GT
After much deliberation I'll probably try and get a M4 or M3 competition.

Pricing is not bad and the update is not due for a year or 2.
I would love the AMG GT but I don't think it's a suitable daily drive.

the M2 is great but I think I'll always have that feeling that I got the "baby" M

M2 Comp over M3/M4 for me personally.. You might view it as a "baby" M, but from all of the reviews and feedback I have heard, it is the one to have..

RE: M2 Comp vs F80 M3 vs AMG GT
Might be baby by series but the M2C is the one to have, most reviews state that and I'm sure that the M2C is not much slower, if at all against an M4Comp.

RE: M2 Comp vs F80 M3 vs AMG GT
I test drove a M2c back to back with the M4c. They really feel like completely different cars.

And for me at least it's not all about straight line speed. The feel of the M4 is much better. It's more spacious as well.

I love the dynamics of the M2 but the M4 just has a better road presence I think and I like the way it handles vs the M2.

Also drove a C63s today. Feels super heavy compared to the M cars. The V8 sound is something else though.

The other downside of the AMG GT as well is that it actually has a detuned engine. Any new c63 will give it a run and the E63 will absolutely smoke it. Sad.

Also had a chuckle at that. Personally i would go for the AMG GT. NOt a merc fan at all, but sacrifice a few years in age and get way way more car for your money.
