Golf 8 optional extras
So the new golf has been showcased to the world and it looks nice and and and... its a golf.

But something caught my attention but I am not sure if it was from Car Wow or another YouTube channel.

Apparently with the new focus on tech, all the golfs will come with optional extras like lane keep assist, PDC, adaptive cruise control etc already pre-loaded on to the car but inactive. So if you want to add something the you get your VIN number and some money.

Pay VW these said monies and they will just flip a switch, download whatever is then required for that particular option and you can drive out.

Did anyone else catch this?

Can already "unlock" a lot of features using vagcom
If there hardware is there, is only a matter of time

Is VW now following in the footsteps of EA? Basically giving you half a car and the rest is DLC (Downloadable Content)??? Fencelook

Yes I saw the same vid. CarWow 10 things to know about the new golf.

So order a bog standard one from the factory, save some cash, then ask a tuner to unlock all the optional extras lol

RE: Golf 8 optional extras
I'm really curious as to how they plan to regulate this? They do know that most people won't mind voiding their warranties (as I am sure any after marked 'unlocks' will instantly void it. Or even those with the resources will just revert to "factory" settings when it has to go in for service?

On the software side it will be hackable as is the case currently. I hope other manufacturers follow suit especially on the higher end features.

It makes sense for the second hand market too, now you can buy a car and have the options you want unlocked even in second hand condition as opposed to looking for a specific one with this and that.

RE: Golf 8 optional extras
Its not that easy....

I tried to get the Performance monitor enabled on my Golf 7R and many people have tried locally and international.
SWaaP, Software as a product, is only available through a dealership. The dealership plugs your car in and sends a request for which ever product you want. They then send you an FES code to release the function.

If i remember correctly, just to enable performance monitor its like R3000 or something.
