Should dealerships be opened more on weekends instead of weekdays?

Should dealerships be opened more on weekends instead of weekdays?
Heard an interesting argument recently that it is pointless for dealerships (the sales division, in particular) to be opened during office hours on weekdays and only on limited times on Saturday and then stay closed on Sunday.

It would make more sense to keep dealerships sales divisions opened for a few hours on weekdays (say 10am - 2pm, to avoid the morning and afternoon traffic and to also cater for those people who don't work day jobs) and stay opened for 8 hours each on Saturday and Sunday.

The truth is that most people only have the weekends available to go car shopping. During the weekdays, we are too busy working and earning so that we can afford to buy the car that we want. Why take time off during work to buy a car?

The argument does not necessarily hold for car servicing - most people want their car available on the weekend and are happy to let their car be serviced while they work on the weekday.

Thoughts?

My personal view is that we don't really need new car sales divisions at car dealers. I prefer the Tesla sales model. You visit an experience centre to try out a car and then place the order and do all the admin online. The new car then gets delivered to you. Simple. Obviously, for used cars you will still need a proper sales team at the dealer so you can test drive the used car properly.

Ive heard a story from a guy that got retrenched at BMW - saying that late next year sometime the new sales ppl will fall away from BMW and you will order your car online.

Not sure how true this is but cant see why not Fencelook

Sure, if you happy paying List price with no discounts, go ahead and order online.

I prefer going in and sitting with a New car salesperson, discussing options, specs and negotiating discounts and trade ins etc.

Personally I have never found it an issue or inconvenient doing so during the business week.

If you think a new car get sold by people walking in to the doors, you're wrong.

Opening up those times in the week stops AVIS from buying fleets, people come test drive on Saturday and get the deal one via Email in the week.

If you haven't worked in a dealer you haven't witnessed the madness.

Also if you want the dealer open for 8 hours on Saturday and Sunday, do you want the banks to open too?
Oh and screw the poor salesmen who must now give up a Sunday so its
easier for you.

Remember all the people it affects just so you can come look at a car on Sunday...

Personally i think dealerships should only be open on Tuesdays...

On a more serious note, if its inconvenient for you to take some time off during the week then its probably in your best interest to find a new job.

In this day and age, the sales guy will bring a car to you to have a look.

Remember, a sales guy will entertain 8 tyre kickers before a proper buyer comes along.

"During the weekdays, we are too busy working and earning so that we can afford to buy the car that we want."

Be glad you have weekends, in the motor industry we work 6 days a week to make it possible for you to buy the car you work so hard for.

The sad reality is that most jobs will be made redundant in the next 10-15 years. A bot will be doing my job in the near future.

Granted, some, if not most, salespeople do work very hard and it is indeed appreciated - especially those like Nick.
