E46 330i VS E87 130i
sup fellas.

came across a add on FB marketplace for a 2006 130i 5 door , 184 000km, recently serviced and described as "well maintained and very well taken care of" for R90 000.00

car is not advertised on gumtree/olx that i could find so cant give you a link - but if you check on marketplace you'll spot it immediately

dont really have an itch to sell my 330i , but i always liked the chunky look of the 1series 130i's and reckon i can get R100k for mine and have some money in the bank for maintenance or preventative maintenance.

any thoughts on the 1 series ?

from some quick googling i couldnt find too many issues with the E97 130i

sorry , just found it on OLX

https://www.olx.co.za/item/2006-bmw-1-se...1060007482

should i swing mine and move up to newer technology, car looks very clean .

RE: E46 330i VS E87 130i
With the E87, you gain more power, slightly newish car to e46 chassis, more “toss-ability” (if there is such a word), etc.

I would caution though as the cost margin is small taking transaction costs into account. That R10k will disappear quite quickly.

I.e you must drive around, license the car, give the other person a discount on your car through haggling, it’s a pain in the arse selling a car.

Unless you have a buyer lined up, might be worth it.

Current:
2014 320i F30 - M-Sport (Mrs)
2012 3.0d F25 - M-Sport (Family Wagon)
2005 325ci E46 - M-Sport (Mr)
2003 330ci E46 - Weekend (Mr)

Previous BMWs:
2012 328i F30 - Powerful racy motor
2012 320i E90 - Solid built, disappointing performance
2010 3.0d E70 - Versatile car, strong diesel motor
2004 320i E46 - Built like a tank, superb motor
2003 320i E46 - Money pit, lemon of note

RE: E46 330i VS E87 130i
If you plan on modifying an E87 130i has some nice upgrades you can do but its a n52 for maintenance might be pricey.

Personally I have had an E36, E90 and my E87 is the best beemer that I have ever had hands down

If you dont plan on modifying it, I would look for one with less KM

Newer motor yes, more power yes, but maintenance costs are much more.

Just an example, M54 water pump, mechanical, about R650 at Goldwagen.

N52 water pump, electric, about R6500.

Just a thought to consider Thumbs

if i was to go through with it , pump & thermostat would be something i'd do within the 1st week , if it hasnt been done by previous owner.

RE: E46 330i VS E87 130i
Great engine, and lovely soundtrack.

Assuming that it was, indeed, well taken care of, then the below should be your only concerns:

Waterpump/thermostat
VCG
OFHG
Vanos solenoids/complete vvt failure
Suspension bits - shocks/steering rack/ends tie-end-rods etc
Coilpacks will probably give in, one-by-one, soon, or soon enough. No biggy.

Start it up when it's cold. Check for hunting/rough idle or slow startup.

Hydraulic valve lifters are probably ticking. Common N52 gremlin. More of an annoyance than an issue. Don't confuse the ticking/rattling for the timing chain though...

RE: E46 330i VS E87 130i
Personally I think that 130i is likely not as good an example as your current E46.

Better the devil you know, than the devil you don't.

I wouldn't make the switch, not for that 130i example that you posted.

That 130i looks great but honestly they said the owner is an elderly person which seems like they talking kak

I recon go for it if you prepared to pay for the maintenance costs, I think the 130i motorsport hatch which will hold its value

RE: E46 330i VS E87 130i
If it was my decision, I would say keep the E46 it looks great and you know what you have.
Listing a car as "well maintained and very well taken care of" is also very subjective. I would say preventative maintenance falls into this category, but someone else might say that as long as it was serviced and cleaned.
