Irresponsible uncle and the electric handbrake

car Irresponsible uncle and the electric handbrake
Driving around with my nephew, Can't be more than 4 years old. So since we were going around the corner I didn't bother with the child seat or to restrain the little man. Yes, very irresponsible I should be taken to the Gallows Pole.

Get up to 30kph or so and all of a sudden the car brakes HARD!!!

If you have ever moved from a manual car and immediately drove an auto and you do left foot braking by mistake looking for the clutch... that feeling.

Little comrade had pulled the handbrake button while the car was in motion.

Made me wonder if the system works and higher speeds. So I tested it out and it works up to 100kph. (kid was out of the car for this part of the experiment) I am not brave enough to test it faster as the car reacts in a strange way. Its like ABS but on steroids.

There is a strange mechanical grinding sound like the pads are finished.

Up to 40kph it will stop instantly. Above that then the "ABS" kicks in which in itself makes the car slight uncontrol able.

Made me wonder, why would they keep that button active at higher speeds? surely mistakes can happen on the freeway or irresponsible people might have unrestrained kids in the car.

RE: Irresponsible uncle and the electric handbrake
Seems broken.

My Frenchy with a E-brake will activate and then immediately disengage. It would be a legal nightmare for a company if a kid accidentally switches it on while in motion so yes your cars are broken.

RE: Irresponsible uncle and the electric handbrake
Isn’t it supposed to be an emergency brake?

RE: Irresponsible uncle and the electric handbrake
Not a fault. It’s engages as an Emergency brake. My S4 did this and I tested it with speeds in excess of 140km/h.

When pushed/pulled it will bring the car to a stop in the quickest possible manner using the brakes on all four corners. Pretty much how you would jump on the brakes but quicker.

Because of it braking with all four corners you will still not be able to do a Handbrake turn. I tried that as well. Bluebiggrin

When you pulled it, didn’t it give you a error message saying Emergency Braking or something like that? It is unnerving the first time you use it, but if you are preparing for it and do it, it’s not that bad.

RE: Irresponsible uncle and the electric handbrake
I guess you should look at it as a normal conventional handbrake?
If a kid had to yank up your handbrake, the same effect would be had...

RE: Irresponsible uncle and the electric handbrake
I tested it by mistake on my 6 series in traffic one day. I lifted the button at like 30km/h and instantly locked the wheels and stopped. My buddy has an E70 X5 and the button merely slows the car down, mine instanlty stops the car. Have never tested my car above that speed cos the braking was brutal and everyone kinda stared at me in traffic after I did... So left it at that.

Yes it works in the f series at high speeds. My daughter pulled it while I was travelling on the M1N at about 130kph, I did shit myself.
