01 E46 330i Oil
Hi

I just wanted to check if it was normal that my car hasn’t needed an oil top up yet, the last time I did was in March when it was really low and filled it up to it’s peak maximum, it runs well and with no issues... It’s currently on 3xx xxx kM I’ll check in the morning the exact mileage.

RE: 01 E46 330i Oil
I found it depends on driving style, but at that mileage you probably need a topup. On my 330 with 210k mileage, it looks like after complete fill up, it needs a topup after 2000km.

It will however vary from car to car, because it depends on how much wear there is on the piston rings.

Also, if you have done the 02pilot mod or have oil catch can, then you probably dont need to top up at all, latter needs a clean though.

RE: 01 E46 330i Oil
I checked the dip stick and there’s still pretty lots of oil on it... what would the latter be?

They can chow oil in heavy town driving, but settles nicely on the open road.

What type of mileage do you do on a monthly basis?

Latter was referring to the oil catch can. It picks up dirt in the oil, same as the oil filter. I suspect you don't have this setup so no worries about it.

RE: 01 E46 330i Oil
When i drive my car hard, She barely needs a top up. When i cruise, then after about 2000km, She needs... Weird. i would assume its the other way around. lol..

185 000km.
No oil leaks, Exhaust smoke. Compression is still Strong ( cant remember what it read at last service )

I check it every morning just to be sure. lol

I personally wouldn't go for an oil catch can.

That said, its important to first understand why there is oil usage on the M54B25/30 engines.

My simple understanding of this is, with time, the piston rings get some wear and they don't seal 100% anymore. So when you have lots of vacuum in the bottom of the block, and close to zero vacuum in the crank case (top), small amounts of oil gets past the rings and then you literally burn the oil. This is why the usage still happen, even if you have no oil leaks and also no smoke.

There are 3 fixes to this.
1. Engine rebuild, where you replace the rings. This is expensive and not worth doing unless you have other reasons for doing the engine rebuild as well.

2. oil catch can. This can needs cleaning, and so for me, it doesn't take away the work of checking the oil level weekly. So not really a solution.

3. 02pilot mod. This is a super inexpensive option that introduces vacuum to the crankcase in conditions where there would be no vacuum, with the side effect that you r oil usage then goes away. My mechanic friend is skeptical about this, because if you have too much vacuum in the crankcase, then the opposite can happen, you can have fuel leaking down to the bottom, which is worse than having oil leak upwards as it will cause other damage, because the fuel will thin the oil.

Either way, the 02pilot modification, is detailed here: https://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=1115223

The user named 02pilot that came up with the idea while dealing with issues on his own car, has made the post with the discovery here (from 2012-02-14): https://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/showt...st23714558

For myself, I found the video from 50skid on youtube, from the first link above, to be the most helpful to explain the issue as someone that like me, is not a mechanic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NYp3ieMy5oI

RE: 01 E46 330i Oil
My '01 330 used about a pint of oil every 3 to 4 tanks of fuel and I ran Helix Ultra. At the last service before I sold her, APS changed the oil to Helix HX7 and in 5000kms before the new owner came to fetch her I didn't need a top up at all. Sold the car with 150k on the clock. I ported the motor at 120k so the motor was new inside.

RE: 01 E46 330i Oil
My 2003 325i has 175,500km on the clock, and it uses 600ml oil for every 1,000km driven. I know the valve stem seals need attention, as all the symptoms point to it.
I do an oil chance every year irrespective of kms driven.
I will say that I do 98% town driving and peak hour to work and back, and I drive like a spietkop so always hard, but still get 10.5L/100kms and have no performance loss on her.
Was at KZN a month ago, first time driving that far since 2011, and got 7.2L/100km.
The manual states that up to 1L/1,000km driven is still ok for oil use, so I am not worried at the moment.
I also still use the BMW oil, which is very thin, almost like water,so the way I drive it will burn through.
Note that I have a full Decat with 57mm twin freeflow as well.

Wow that’s impressive, I’m so shocked you got that low.. the town driving being 10.5 is amazing Praise I can only wish for such because it’s really hard and ever since I focus on the Energy Control in town driving makes me stressed.
