Oil advise required

Hi all

I have an F30 320i Sport just on 100 000km. It is now out of MP, and I am thinking of doing the oil change myself. I will then try to source a good mechanic to do the services when the CBS interval is met (currently another 12000km to go.)

I am looking for advice on what oil and what grade to use? I will purchase the oil filter from BMW themselves, to keep with OEM parts.

I have read forums saying the best is 0w30 oil, and most recommending Castrol Edge. I haven't heard of a 0w30 previously, and always used 5w40 on my VWs when self servicing.

Could the knowledgeable in this field, please advise on the best brand, and grade of oil to use and the reasons?

Do you know what oil was being used previously?

Honestly, just stick with the BMW stuff (it's perfectly fine) and change it every 10 000km. It's not like your car has a high revving S-engine, or being raced.

Bud, my 2c on this.. Do your normal/CBS oil changes at the dealership and get them to stamp the book - this way you maintain FSH with the dealer.

You can do all other maintenance, including interim oil changes, filters, etc (<10k mileage) at an Indy/DIY and keep a secondary record of other maintenance. Did this with my E90 and made a difference to buyer's peace of mind when purchasing.

With regards to oil, dealers would be using 0w/30, which is what your car would be used to. I would suggest stick with this weighting, but I will wait for the oil experts to chime in. I use 5w/40 on my E46.

Previously the car was only serviced by BMW and only on CBS intervals. So it would have been the standard BMW oil. Not sure what they use...

I do tend to do some spirited driving every now and then, so would prefer an oil that gives a bit of extra protection and lubrication for this. I know the 320i is not a high end sports car, but does allow for decent spirited driving still, and with the condition of our roads, and speed traps all over does just fine, for the now and again racing.

Most people say they aren't that bad, I have never bought from BMW.. Usually they just get the necessary 1l's from BMW, as I've heard its not way out.

BMW OEM oil used to be Castrol but they have moved to Shell. Basically just rebranded from another manufacturer, as is the OEM way.

The BMW oil is basically Shell Helix Ultra which is a good oil. Certainly good enough for some spirited driving and there. The most important thing is make sure that you are using an oil that meets BMWs requirements, and is changed frequently. Beyond that, I really think you are splitting hairs.

As for 0w-30 - a lot of those recommendations come from overseas with very cold climates. The 5w-30 that we get here is fine for SA.

All of the above is of course, my opinion. But I do believe that most modern oils are all very good and as long as you are changing it often (every 10 000km), I doubt you will have any issues.

I personally use Liqui Moly Molygen 5w-40 in my E46 330i. I found that my oil consumption was slightly less as compared to the BMW 5w-30, and I have annecdotal reports about its effectiveness at cleaning the engine.

Just get BMW oil and filter, then you don't need to make decisions about the wide range of options.

You can use Castrol, Shell, Liqui Molly, BMW,
They all have 5w30 specification. LL-01 (approved for Bmw petrol engines)

for older vehicles with above 120 000km, I use 5w40 as it's thicker. If I use 5w30 on my E46's , I have to top up after approx 10 000km.

Don't be too caught up in brand names.....Fencelook specifications are far more important.

Your advise is much appreciated. So I will source the filter from BMW directly, and shop around for a decent oil 5w30 LL-01. That should do.. I believe Goldwagen stocks the good brands Castrol, Shell and Liqui Molly, and I they might be a bit cheaper than the dealerships.

I plan on changing the oil every 15000km and do the other CBS services at a reputable Indy.

I find myself in the same boat as you. Goldwagen has Liqui Moly running at R390 for 5W30. The Helix ultra is a great buy at R399 though. I might go that way. Planning my first oil change for tonight.
