F30 320d Gearbox dead
Hi Guys, has anyone had an Auto gearbox on F30 replaced? what was the cost? Wife drove over a rock and I'm told it damaged the gearbox. The car had to be towed to a place in Sandton, looks like Renew it in sandton, on the map. BlueCry

Hi. Sorry to hear about that. I would get the car to ZF. I'm assuming the MP has expired. I would suggest you speak to your insurance as well.

Best do an insurance claim? Don't even wat to know how many hundred of thousands a Brand New box from BMW would be.. Or chat to ZF? Maybe they can guide as well?

Did it smash the sump ? Did all the oil leak out? Did she drive it without oil?
Whats it doing for you to assume its dead?

Maybe you just cracked the sump and the oil leaked out, If you didnt drive it after the car leaked its oil , you may just need to replaced the sump ( which has the transmission oil filter in it I think , replace the oil and go from there.

Agree with the other guys as well though , Check with your insurance first .
If a rock damaged the transmission like that , who knows what else it damaged under there .

Last time I spoke to ZF, a complete rebuild for an x3 was about R55k.

no one can really say how much it will cost you until you know the extent of the damage, as mentioned previously, get hold of ZF and let them inspect.

According to her, there was no oil leak under the car. After hitting the rock, the car made a bad noice and it was vibrating badly then she decided to stop and call for help. I suspect she drove it for some distance before it started making the noice. I can't tell much about the issue because I'm not in the country, but the tow truck guys said the gearbox is damaged. I have made an insurance claim but wanted to find out how much the repairs might cost because my excess is R5k. If the repairs are around that, then I will have to cancel the claim and repair the car myself. But if it needs a new gearbox then, the insurance will have to take care of that, I guess.

Claim

If its just the sump and oil, your going to be looking at 5k anyway.

If she heard a noise or indication that the car is unhappy, then its probably too late..

I will be on the other side if anybody needs me Bluebiggrin

I Agree with zaleonardz , which ever way you look at it , its going to cost more then 5k , your better off claiming and having your insurance sort it out . A new box on these cars , even a second hand box is not cheap and with that if you do go the second hand route you are still going to have to do a sump and oil change anyway .

Thank you for the advice guys, much appreciated. I have claimed and hope the insurance just get me a new gearbox. I'm not sure if I will be happy with the repaired one BlueCry

RE: F30 320d Gearbox dead
It could be quite worse, if the oil cooler on the gearbox got hit and it mixed oil and water into the entire system.

So definitely, let insurance sort it out.

RE: F30 320d Gearbox dead
my insurance came back to me, the car has been assessed and the repairs are going to be done by Renew-it sandton. Has any one used this panel beater before? the damage is not on the gear box only and it looks like the Mrs was not driving slow when she hit the rock. On the report sent by the assessor, it looks like they are going to replace a whole lot of stuff and re-spray the front bumper. I have a feeling that some of these things are just made up to get the quotation high dunno anymore
But I will be checking the car to ensure that all that they say they are going to replace, have been replaced. The gearbox is going to be fixed, not replaced. which is my only worry and hope they do the good job on the repairs

RE: F30 320d Gearbox dead
Hi,

Sorry to hear of your situation and wish you well on sorting it out.

I had booked my A4 back in 2010 (still new) at Danmar Sandton, which I think is what Renew It Sandton was called back then. They also apparently overcharged a bit on the work, but the insurer was happy to pay. It was a side front panel replacement job, but the car was booked in for over a month (they blamed delays on paint supplies and parts from Audi). To add insult to injury, the guy who booked my car dinged the fender on the other side while I was watching him park it. When I finally got the car back, the lower sill beading on one side of the car was skew and a bit loose. It was another rig marole to get that sorted out.

When a truck reversed into me 2 years later, I told my insurer that I will never use Danmar Sandton and I recommended Carello Autobody in Kyalami (they were close to my home back then). Carello were absolutely professional and even offered some discount off my excess. They were done in about 1-2 weeks with the repair. Flawless work.

If Renew It Sandton is totally new compared to Danmar Sandton, then my experience there is moot.

RE: F30 320d Gearbox dead
Good luck bud...

I've had nothing but horrible experience with RenewIt Sandton...

I was unfortunately rear ended a while back... standing still at a traffic light and the driver behind was busy on her phone...
Wasn't major. They were supposed to strip the rear bumper, replace with new one amd respray it. No issues with fenders or any other components. Simple job. Too almost 2 months. They decided to plastic weld, which looked like rubbish. Then tried to tell me its a new bumper. After i kick up a fuss they agree that its poor workmanship and they will indeed get a new bumper. Then they ruin it by not spraying it properly and not fitting it properly and the pdc sensors were recessed... nothing lined up.

After all that i got it to the Sandton auto ARC and it was done properly.

If possible get it done at the Sandton Auto ARC or any other good ARC.

The insurer gave me some silly story about only if my car is on plan or something like that, then it can go to the ARC... which also turned out to be bullsh1t.

So yaaaa.... full on gearbox repair and and and... me personally, I'd stay clear of Renewit Sandton

RE: F30 320d Gearbox dead
Looks like the general consensus is that Renew-It Sandton is no good.

My father also had repairs done by them on his X3 a couple of years ago and the initial repair was shoddy to say the least.

Honeycomb plastics around the fogs were cut out of a large sheet and screwed into the bumper with cap screws (instead of simply clipping in new OEM plastics), LCI grilles were fitted to a pre-LCI car which left a 20mm+ gap between the grilles and bonnet etc. etc.

They eventually sorted it out, but it really should be done right the first time.

I agree with Mike on taking your car to ARC.

RE: F30 320d Gearbox dead
If I may ask,

If the car goes in for repairs, who will do the gearbox repair?
If the Panel shop is doing everything, will they take it to ZF?
What if they take it to some side guy to have it repaired for cheaper?

Bad body work can be seen from outside, most of the time, but a bad fix on a really fancy box might only show up later.

I would ONLY want ZF to repair the box if it was my car...

I've walked the walk...
Now I talk the talk...
