E70 N57 - Oil choices
Hi Guys,

Two quick questions:

1. Best oil for the E70 N57 Diesel engine?

Castrol Edge 0w30 Full Synthetic or Castrol Maganatec 0w30 or anything else?

2. Oil Capacity with filter change - Castrol website says 7.2lt, is this correct?

Thanks! Praise

RE: E70 N57 - Oil choices
I would advise against Caltex. There is a reason why they aren’t the OEM supplier for BMW anymore.

I personally use Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40 and a lot of guys also highly recommend Liqui Moly LM 4100 5W-40. These oils are both widely recommended and used in N57 motors.

EDIT: to add - your car should use about 7.2l in total as recommended by the website Thumbs

RE: E70 N57 - Oil choices
I would suggest the LL04, currently BMW uses BMW original oil which is actually Shell

John,

What do you charge for a oil service with filters?

For what it’s worth Goldwagen is selling Liqui Moly Top Tec 4605 5W-30 for R375 per 5l. This is LL04 BMW approved oilThumbs

The reason probably has little do to with the quality of the oil and much to do with whatever agreement BMW struck with Shell.
Having said that, some Castrol oils were reputed to cause sludge, especially with highter service intervals. I've been using Shell Helix Ultra 5W40 for years on our petrol engines.
