Use of MLS head Gaket
Hallo All

New to Multi Layer Steel head gaskets, I Started up My kadett and oil was mixing with water and the other way around, then removed head, cleaned up everything and tried again, this time water and gas mix. I have not used any compounds or sealer, head was skimmed and reconned, is there anything i can do diffrently ? I suspect it leaks on the block side. And if so any recommendations ?

RE: Use of MLS head Gaket
mls gasket is designed for performance applications, if you are running a stock car and the above is the issue the mls might mask the problem not fix it

did you reuse the head bolts on the car when reassembling it

RE: Use of MLS head Gaket
aaaah ok I see, was the surface of the block skimmed aswell? is the blow by / oil and water mixing in the same spot does it differ?

the overseas E36 community has very mixed reviews about mls gaskets more negative than positive in most cases. most guys eventually opt for a crush ring gasket after going grey with trying to resolve the issues experienced with the mls

RE: Use of MLS head Gaket
Nope the surface on the block was not skimmed, i will try the crushed ring gasket and a few other things and if all else fails, remove the motor and strip it down to send in the block, seriously hope i do not have to.

first it was mixing oil and water ( Oil in the water bottle ) and water to oil ( water to sump ) stripped down cleaned everything, that is sorted now but water goes to gas chamber and gas goes to water bottle.

RE: Use of MLS head Gaket
So After some input from Fellow Fanatics and pointed me in some directions i investigated a bit and found some more info on these gaskets.
Some MLS gaskets come with coatings , some not. Alternatevily Copper gasket sealer is used together with these gaskets to help seal it properly, so i will find me some and give it a go. Thanks to DannyOPC too.

RE: Use of MLS head Gaket
So the Copper-gasket Sealer did not work, i removed the engine, stripped it and send the block for a skim. After this and installing back the engine it was not leaking anymore.

Yes it was, firstly it was warped slightly and secondly corrosion marks around water pockets.
