Max Torque on gear box
Gents what's the maximum torque can the 320d pre lci handle? Anyone with more than 500 nm?

I have owned 3 vehicles before, but this BMW is my first car to own!

Hi Bennit, I think the only guys who can really tell you that is the guys from ZF. There's a branch in Cape town and one in JHB. ZF are the manufacturers of gearboxes and diffs, so they should have specs. That's all I can help you with. Are you planning on making that much torque ? That's quite alot.

RE: Max Torque on gear box
Accoring to RealOEM the pre LCi has the ZF 6HP gearbox, LINK

According to Wiki, the torque rating is 400Nm, LINK

I would say its on the conservative side tho

RE: Max Torque on gear box
I disagree, if I'm not mistaken, the 320d makes 340 nm. I have a 330d which is rated 500 nm. They recon that my gearbox can handle up to 700 nm, that's 200 nm more than standard. I can't see how the 320d kan only handle 60 nm more. Depending on what you want to do, I think the 320d's gearbox will handle more. If you'll use it as a racing car and drive under full load all the time with it making over 400 nm, then yes, I think you will end up with gearbox problems, but if you drive moderate and use that power now and then, I think the box will be ok

RE: Max Torque on gear box
If I can throw my 2 cents in here too

I think the box can handle more then what's stated about BUT it all depend on power delivery. If the car is tuned correctly and the power delivery is smooth and limmited in lower gears all should be fine.

The more aggressive the power comes in the more stress on the box. If it's smooth and comes in gradually then I doubt any problems will occur.
I been following and chatting to a guy in the USA who drag races a f350 Ford
He has been through 2 transmission when he added nitros because of the kick it was giving. He now upgraded to a 2 step kit and no issues so far. He pushing more power but progressively instead of all or nothing.

I also think you need to look at your driving style. If you hard on the throttle then don't expect things not to break. It's better to nurse the car low down and then plant it from say 3rd.

RE: Max Torque on gear box
I'm make 490nm on the wheels now.
Also agree the way the car is tuned plays a big role. The weak gears if I'm not mistaken is 1,2 And 3rd.
I use to make 420nm with the previous tuning company. Was like that for 3 or 4 months.

Its important to note 320d and 330d use different gearboxes. You have a valid point tho in terms of % increase for "margin of safety"

RE: Max Torque on gear box
Yes I know it's different boxes, my point simply is that I think the safety factor should be more or less the same and depending on how you use it and look after it, regarding service and so-on. The best however is to get the no on the box and contact ZF to get the right info

RE: Max Torque on gear box
Thanx guys! I don't think e90 is a racing machine. But now and then I like to put the foot down! I'm planning to do a down pipe and a map! I kinda like what RK Motion is doing, but then there plenty tuners! So I see!

I have owned 3 vehicles before, but this BMW is my first car to own!

Then you have nothing to stress about. Do your down pipe and software and enjoy your car. With a down pipe done, they usually do stage 2 software. Give us feedback afterwards.
Keep well

RE: Max Torque on gear box
Good morning
I see you also drive a 330d. I believe you did down pipe and software ? Where have you had it done and what was your gains ? I was on my way to Xcede to have my software done when my alternator packed up. It's sorted now, so I'm ready to do the software. How did it affect your fuel consumption ?
Looking forward to hear from you

From my point of view I'll go with RK. They set the bench mark very hey for the other tuners out there. You won't be disappointed with them. I think he went with tnt downpipe.
