N55 Engine Bay Clean-up
Guys,

What do you suggest I do here to clean up the engine bay?

She's real dirty...

What can I safely do?

Chuck some prepsol and wipe down?
Gently spray down excess?
Wipe dry? Leave in sun to dry?

I am worried about water getting on parts and then starting corroding over time? Causing electrical issues down the line. Or am I being over cautious?

Really don't like seeing her so dirty...

Thanks for any suggestions...

Pete

RE: N55 Engine Bay Clean-up
Steam clean is the safest to clean engine.. i never put water in the engine bay...
My buddy with e36 m3 had bmw replace countless parts due to them pressure washing engine...

Anyway if you don't have a steamer then best is to use some kind if all purpose degreaser and a few micro fibre cloths...

You'll have to go over it a few times but start with big pieces and around the engine bay and under bonnet..

Be patient..

Prepsol or Wynns 1min mag cleaner and brushes to work it in. Rinse off with brushes and hot water in the delicate areas and light hose pipe on less delicate areas, engines bays are designed to take a fair amount of splash rain/puddles etc just not direct jet of water or high pressure. I'd also work on a warm engine.

Use common sense at all times and a few black bags to cover the seriously delicate stuff when the water comes out never hurt.

To dress the plastics Shield professional silicone-free plastic and rubber dressing worked in with a brush is amazing, better than the similar Wurth and Meguairs products, R125 at Midas for a big bottle, you can thank me later Wink

RoflRoflBiglolBiglol Ive never had an engine issue washing it 30+ years, guys are too scared....but as Blueskye mentions...Prepsol+++ WithStu

if there are things that are going to rust it wont be from a bit of washing - your car heats up and cools down every time you drive it and there is moisture in the air that can/will do more rusting.

RE: N55 Engine Bay Clean-up
Your DME sits on the side of the engine. don't get that wet
Don't get cleaning agent of any kind near your MAF.
Doont get water near/in close to your ABS pump

Other then that, go mal

I will be on the other side if anybody needs me Bluebiggrin

Careful around headlights - water in the xenon control units can be an expensive repair. You can HP wash the engine bay just be carefull and sensible. Having compressed air available to help blow off any excess water is handy.

Steam clean with a decent APC. Cover all necessary electrical parts.
