Smile_sad Another water pump failure?
Hi All,

So I heard this pump noise today for the first time. Is it safe to assume this is the water pump going? Sounds bit like a water pump in a fish tank.

At first the noise isn't there, particularly when the engine is a cooler temp but soon as it starts to get warmer the noise becomes audible and remains for a few seconds after the engine is switched off.

Excuse the low light of the video.

RE: Another water pump failure?
Doesn't seem like a WP failure as it would have definitely thrown many warnings on the dash.

Radiator fan that might be busy breaking???

Hope it's a quick inexpensive fix bud...

And of course when I was at the dealer this morning, no noise.

Another water pump failure?
I googled the sound and saw a couple of YouTube vids. Seems it is one of the ways it can go. I prefer an audible noise than a silent killer.

Maybe it is the fan too. The dealer requested the video and is sending it to a BMW mechanic to see if he knows the sound. Hopefully will have feedback today and what they reckon could be the issue (as the car still doesn't want to make a sound now even after traveling 100km)

RE: Another water pump failure?
Does sound like water pump but hard to tell from the video.

Is that not the solenoid though?

Another water pump failure?
New day and still no return of a distinct sound.

Spoke the some engineering goons who reckon, albeit a slim chance, based on the fact that the radiator was recently replaced due to a leak, if inferior coolant was used to fill the system up again, and if the proper bleeding process wasn't performed, a separation of the fluids is possible and a pooling off gas/air could also occur somewhere resulting the cavitation being heard under the right conditions if the gas breaks free and enters the pipes.

This in only a theory and nothing truly justifies it but fact is, if there was some form of cavitation, water pumps don't like running dry and the impeller could get damaged. One would only be able to assess if the pump is removed and inspected. To me that sounds like a pain if everything seems fine now.

How loud are your working water pumps after switching the car off? I can still hear it but sounds "healthy" to me for an electric water pump.

RE: Another water pump failure?
Try bleeding the coolant circuit (ignition on, max temp, low fan and depress accelerator for 10sec) to activate the pump or disconnect the aux fan when it's noisy to isolate

I bled the system. It was spluttering a bit in the first minute or two.

Another water pump failure?
Just another update on the situation. I have not heard the sound again since last Sunday. I even drive from Jhb to Bfn and back again this weekend, pushing it sometimes, and nothing was wrong. No noises, no overheating, no lack of performance, nothing (barring a new creak noise from the right side of the dash).

So I honestly have no idea what it could have been a result of. Maybe there was some air trapped in the system that made its way to the water pump and it is out now. Eitherway, I suppose I have to wait for the noise to return or the something to break to determine what it was.

RE: Another water pump failure?
Doesn't sound like a waterpump failure to me. If the water pump fails, the car will throw a fault code and might go in to limp mode.
