E90 GearBox
Howsit guys

I drive an E90 LCi 320d, I noticed recently that sometimes when I put car into reverse from park, auto box by the way, the car jerks and engages into reverse. its quiet harsh. it happens in the mornings after parked whole night.

The car is now standing outside due to some renovations, could it be the cold or is it something serious that I should worry about.

thanks guys

RE: E90 GearBox
Is the car parked on an incline and does the handbrake work 100%? I found with my wife's car (not a BMW but also auto) it does this when parked on an incline, particularly if it rolls slightly forward or backwards. I wouldn't say it is very harsh (you can feel it, but it is more of a noise), but it is definitely noticeably different. When parked level in the garage or visitor bay, then it changes smoothly.

RE: E90 GearBox
thanks bud, that could be the problem, its not an incline but an uneven surface.

RE: E90 GearBox
i also have the same problem on the same car it comes and goes though , pressing the brake for longer before you change into reverse seems to help or its just my imagination.

RE: E90 GearBox
What you can do is park the car, put it in neutral and pull up the handbrake. Then let go of the brake and once the car is park on the handbrake, then put the car in park and switch it off.

This way when you start the car the gear lever will not feel like it is clunking out of the gear when shifting it from park to reverse.

With an auto, when you arrive at your destination, you should put the car into neutral and use the handbrake to hold the car, then put it into park - that way it doesn't sit on the gearbox.

Good point, never thought of that.

What mileage is the car at? the auto boxes also get clunky when they are due for oil change.

RE: E90 GearBox
I find that with my car (2008 E60 530d) that it takes a few seconds to engage reverse/drive, first time in the day. What i do now is let the car idle for 10 or 20 seconds and then engage reverse/drive. I must also mention that this car does not get driven daily as i use the X3 for around town/everyday driving. I can only assume that the torque converter drains when standing for a few days (sometimes 10 days to two weeks) and then when suddenly putting it in gear it is like it is low on transmission fluid. Had the fluid level checked at ZF about 5 weeks ago, no problem. As my car is normally parked on a level surface, i do not use the handbrake. Hope this info is of some help!
