Red Devil - a Kadett 200iS Story
Hallo All

The time has come that i introduce my First love.

The Past.....

Back in November 2002 i bought a 1994 Opel Kadett 200is, At the time it had 213 XXXkm on the clock. Back in 2008 i re-sprayed the car myself. At that time the car had a tad less than 400 000 km on.

Some of the pics......

This car has been loyal to me in any given way possible. Carried me through the young years, going to the Wesbank raceway days, had it share of abuse and love.
Everything that had to be done on this car from services to repairs had been done by myself since the day i have owned it. Back in 2014 the impossible happened, i had hit a pothole and right after that the car steered to the left in a strange way.
I climbed out to inspect the front wheels but did not see any fault, when at home i noticed my rear wheel is almost touching the rear bumper, the rear chassis started tearing from the body, i thought this was history for the car so it wasn't used for about a year. Playing with the idea to get another body and rebuild mine into it. I got hold of someone who inspected the car for me and said it can be repaired safely so of the car went and the whole chassis was seam welded.

The Current.....

November last year i had the unfortunate to put two rods through the cylinder walls, a bit of bad luck on my side as the oil cap was not closed properly and out the oil went, the rest is history. The car is on 498 XXX km.

I started building a new engine, A spare block i had went in for chemical cleaning and replaced all welsh plugs and some new epoxy paint. The internals was sent for balancing ( for future turbocharging )and a new set of pistons were aquired.

Then it bit me, i decided to carry on with turbo charging it now instead of later while everything is on the table.

I found this kit , it has been used but this will be my first turbo build and for a start i think it should be fine.

I got my hands on a set of forged pistons together with 550CC injectors and TS conrods.

[Image: conrods_7357957982.jpg][Image: injectors_36359634.jpg][Image: pistons_9057208201.jpg]

Still on the cards.

1. Send in another block for resizing for the forged pistons and also new welsh plugs and coating.
2. Fuel management.
3. OPC headgasket.
4. ACL bearings.
5. ARP Studs.

Then assembling can start, will have a few hick-ups here and there but hopefully by mid May she will be up and running again.

This should be interesting, please keep us updated!

Just curious, what is the difference between the 200is and the 200ts?

Thank you gizmo but the 200iS was 8 valve and 16 Valve turbo on the Kadett. The astra had 8 Valve ( 200i ) , the 16 Valve ( 200iE ) and the 200tS wich was the turbocharged version.( since the Euro versions came the 16 valve died with it ).

Sorry, was thinking of the 200iE euro version.

I can remember this car back in the days of wesbank, it's nice you have kept her so long. How many years have you owned her now? I'm over 14yrs of ownership of my e36 now and will never sell!

Not many people hang onto their first love, you and I are the exception.

(02-04-2017 08:35 AM)Gizmo@GARAGE46 Wrote:  Sorry, was thinking of the 200iE euro version.

The 200iE Euro version was 8 valve, using the C20SEH engine, same engine used in the Kadett 200iS. The Euro edition was a stripped down version of what went before on sell out before the Astra H was introduced and they never used the 16V C20XE engine in the Kadett or the Euro..

The 200TS had the C20LET engine with the Getrag F28 6 speed transmission. The 8 Valvers had the F18 5 speed gearbox in either C or W configuration, which means close ratio (Kadett 200is / Euro, Astra 200iE Euro) or wide ratio, Astra 200i.

I had to get rid of my 200iS I was restoring due to parking constraints recently. Spent about 75k on her rebuilding everything. One of the final things on my list was to strip and respray her.

I was fortunate enough many years ago to have owned both the Kadett and Astra 200TS when they were new and yes they were a handful if you didn't know how to drive them. The limited slip diff was quite tricky in the corners and just went straight into understeer off throttle, but pinning the throttle would just pull it through the corners. Torque steer was diabolical and the brakes would fade at the first sign of hard braking. Was great fun though, not much that could touch them up on the reef in the day. My E36 M would be left by my Kadett.

Good luck with the build.

RE: Red Devil - a Kadett 200iS Story
Thank you for the clarification.

I remember seeing so many 16v 200is models back in the day, although I was hanging out with street racers when these cars were prominent so all I was seeing was probably 16v head/motor swaps. I never took interest in Opels to ask the owners, still don't have an interest in them, FWD has never been an interest to me.

My 200is euro was 16v. Motor looked similar to the Superboss motor. Mine came 16v from opel. Many i raced back in the day was 16v also. I was in a 200is Euro car club and everyone was 16v.

That is the C20XE motor which, as Gordvisr states, never ever came in a Kadett from factory. The car you had was probably the 180is 16V which was a C18SEL engine with Ecotec on the plug cover, with 99kW.

Ahhh, my first love too. IMHO the 180is was better than the 200is because of the 16v ecotec motor, 180 came with 99KW DOHC and the 200 came with 95KW (If I remember correctly) and was a SOHC. The golf 3 GTI at the time I think only had 89KW.

Love the car man!!

No problem bud, just sharing info i know about this car, i am currently not part of that group only shared info from that page.

It is possible that it was done factory , maybe a store manager or such, i have seen a corsa ute a while ago that a GM dealer somewhere in Cape Town modified and turbo charged.

That 4 Kw was not that made the diffrence it was the redline that made the difference, but yes would not say they were better but sure faster in stock form.

Yup we did, my Dad had an Astra tS that he bought new in 1994 and the guys at school REFUSED to believe that we had an Astra 200tS, said they only came in Kadetts and blah blah blah.

Many years later I was fortunate to have bought a face lift 1996 model Astra 200tS with very low mileage, that thing was a beast for a factory carPraise

I remember the Astra ts, I also remember a story that there was a sticker that was made for them in the same font as the badges: "M3 eater".

Was a factory option from Opel I was told? Not sure on how true this is.

I remember seeing so many 16v 200is models back in the day, although I was hanging out with street racers when these cars were prominent so all I was seeing was probably 16v head/motor swaps. I never took interest in Opels to ask the owners, still don't have an interest in them, FWD has never been an interest to me.

there are some fun fwd cars out there

nice..remember racing from Muizenberg to Bellville in one of these..against a mate in a VR6....i had a MONZACD16V for a month before it was stolen..fun car

current: BMW E92 M3 (bearings could be fcukd)
