e46 m3 strange noise
hi guys its been a while ... im back in an ///m car ... driving a e46 m3 97 000km .

Done a few trips with the car .. now i notice when driving the car at very low speed and turning right or left theres rubbing or some sort of noise coming from the rear .. any experienced something like this ... spoke to 1 guy he says he had to replace centre shaft , cause the clutches on the slip diff might be broken .. RE: e46 m3 strange noise
put the car on a lift and have a peek...

rather examine first before audible conclusions ... examine the necessary items

Subframe
Propshaft Coupling
Drive Shafts
Diff
make sure all bolts are tight and torqued up to spec

Etc...

then take it from there

RE: e46 m3 strange noise
The LSD is known to groan on slow speed sharp turns.. replacing the fluid wiht the correct BMW fluid that includes a friction modifier solves this (assuming this is your problem).

Its simply the clutches in the LS diff making that noise because the car is not used often.
Dont stress about it.

Some reckon an oil change might fix this, but sometimes it doesn't.

If you get the correct LS oil, WITH THE CORRECT FRICTION MODIFIERS, it might be a good thing to have the oil changed anyway.

Then after the oil change, drive slowly around in circles a few times. one way, then the other.

RE: e46 m3 strange noise
Exactly what's been said above. Youll probably find the diff oil was changed but the incorrect oil could've been used. Get the oem oil from bmw with the Friction modifier (fm booster) and it should remidy itself.

Couple of slow speed 1st gear 360 turns both ways and it should be cured.

Same as above. Replacing the Diff oil with the correct friction modifier will solve your problem. Well documented issue. Good luck and many happy miles

Just make sure they use the correct oil - the bottle has to say " + FM booster". Usually the parts guys at Bmw just want to use the ordinary oil because they don't know any better.

RE: e46 m3 strange noise
Completely normal, clutches in the diff making that noise... I am not convinced you will get it away unless you drive the car often enough
