Most of the shark followers know the car and are aware that big money has been lavished on it.

Car has a few issues erratic idle being one of them and has recently had an aftermarket management system installed.

Rick has published a list of items requiring attention that is absolutely unbelievable.

We shall endeavour to attend to the outstanding issues and will keep this thread to record the progress.

First things to be attended to will be inlet manifold leaks noisy valve train inoperative heater valve as well as a general service for the car to get down to the coast.

Pics soon.

Did I mention that I love these old ladies........

Lets hope you don't find Toyota bolts holding her together. :fencelook:

I think that there are none left after your motor was assembled.

Using general purpose clamps leads to torn rubber hoses.
I think that with the exception of 6 small clamps all the others are general purpose clamps which will be replaced.

The infamous and dreaded red sealer

Leaks in the inlet manifold area.

No4 inlet port cracked.

Fist 3 sets of nuts where easy peasy to remove and on the last 3 I have invented new words.
One needs to be an octopus to get to the nuts.

Head still clean after it had a major rebuild in the UK.
Valve clearances will be done in the am along with new plugs oil and the like

For those shark owners who are contemplating doing an inlet manifold job I would highly recommend that only original gaskets are used as the aftermarket sell a thinner gasket which does not seal effectively which in turn leads to air leaks.

Equally the nuts on the inlet manifold will only accept a 12 spanner so guys be mindfull that if you need a 13 spanner your car has the wrong sized nut.

Injectors serviced.

No6 had a leak on the manifold probably from incorrect fitment/

Aircon and heater seem to be confused after the aircon was redone.

In our search fr the problem we happened upon an explosion of wires.

It will be neatened up when we close the car.

Replacement intake on it's way to Peter.

This car, sigh. If she wasn't so pretty I'd have set her fire for the insurance. :nonono:

So today I tried to decode the "wiring codex of 1 000 wires" and am glad to report that I have duly succeeded.

I do not know who was let loose with Wurth fiber tape in the car but by gosh they sure wound everything they could with it and badly too.

If you ever need to wrap old style wiring there is a method to be applied and the best way, is to observe how the factory specified it and replicate the wind.
Wraping it solid makes the harness stiff and inflexible.

Equally the wires need to be cleaned with a cloth coated in thinners or any other solvent (benzine) so that the dirt is wiped off and the tape adheres better.

I shall be posting pics later.

Hate those clamps myself, Wurth or Ram quality clamps. They have raised sides that dont eat into the hoses and a smooth slide lip that makes sure the hose is tightened equally all- around. When I go scrapyards I try collect genuine BMW clamps off the old cars.

Wiring cleaned up.

Harnesses re created and hung in the correct place.

The balance are OBC, Cigarette lighter, speaker balance and alarm relay.

KZN manifold fitted.

Re routed some of the hoses and other stuff.

This is a view with the water bottle removed.

Generally the car has all its clips brackets etc and all it required was a bit of tidying up.

The aluminium pipe between the airfilter box and the inlet manifold rubber is a bit to short as when the measurements were originally taken the airfilter was missing the rubber foot it rests on and who ever did the conversion did not bother to add a piece of rubber to raise the airfilter to its correct level.

We will attend to that and a few more minor things when the car returns from its trip to the coast.

Idle is still affected by the management system as it does something when the ICV is connected and it hunts.
As soon as the ICV is disconnected idle settles down to 700rpm.

In my opinion aftermarket fuel injection management systems do not work well with this car.

I guess we may start the hunt for a harness and get the car back to stock. We wait and see.

Drove it robustly this morning before giving it to Rick and I am still grinning from ear to ear.

LOVE these old ladies!

p.s I f anyone hears of an E28 being stripped please let me know as I am looking for an airconditioner system complete.
Preferable that I strip the system out the car.

I sourced a secondhand suspension front and rear from an e28 535 to replace on the e24.

Rick has supplied all the front suspension arms new from Meyle(HD) and moranor is supplying all the polly bushes (front and rear).
Suspension arm are at the engineers for the bushes to be pressed out and will be collecting them on Monday and will then await the polly bushes which are on their way in from customs hopefully on Tuesday.

Rick has also sourced e34 M5 brake calipers so we are fitting an M5 brake setup with new discs.

You can see the original red paint in the wheel wells.
At some stage someone sprayed black stone chip in the belief that it looked better.
I am not convinced so I stripped it back to original and will touch up the areas in which the red has worn away.

This is an English car and I now have a deeper appreciation as to why the English boards have posts about rust blaster, heating bolts and soaking bolts prior to loosening them.
The salt that they use on their roads really attacks the metal and corrodes it solid.
I will have to change every single nut and bolt on the suspension.

The brake disc backing plates are wafer thin after having been exposed to numerous salt baths.
The struts are dimpled from rust.

Rick wants poly bushes fitted on the new suspension arms so I will check all welds on the car mounting points and will reinforce any that look suspect.

A slight modification made in SA I suspect.
The strut is held onto the lower suspension by 3 bolts which thread into the bottom of the strut.
Clearly the threads must have stripped and the strut was drilled to accept a longer bolt and nut.

"skank" is anything but.

Credit goes to him for devoting so many resources to this car.

I am almost convinced that a wife would have been a less expensive option :)
