So was running low on Diesel and filled up at Caltex with their new Diesel50. At the Caltex in Plein street Durbanville.

As I admired my car and requested the attendant to check my tire pressure, I noticed the diesel tap still in the holder and the meter running, confused I rounded the car and found the unleaded tap in my car.

Yelling STOP, they had already put in R310 worth of unleaded in my car :cursin:

Called the manager, and they had to get BMW assist to come and drain the tank. This whole proses took the most of 2 hours to complete, they then flushed the tank with diesel.

The part that then annoyed me the most was, they then put in R310 worth of Diesel in my car and said "Thank you you can pay the attendant now"

Surely the inconvenience of taking 2 hours out of my working day, plus having to work on my darling, you would give a free tank of diesel?

So needless to say, I'm not filling up again at Caltex in Durbanville again!!!

That sucks! I would have insisted that they pay the R310 worth of diesel. seriously, 2 hours of your life because their employee don't do his job properly. Ridiculous.

Which Caltex is that, the one by the Medi clinic?

Yes, Caltex at Medi Clinic!

I told him that I did have some fuel left in the car, as after they put in the R310 the needle was not where it normally lies. He then agreed after some persuasion, that he would put in R100 for free. I mean R100? come on!!

I couldn't believe they still let the attendant continue with his duties! I would have fired his ass!!

Had you not noticed what they did, they would be liable for the damage, so R310 would have been a bargain to pay you for noticing the attendants mistake before any serious damage...

I had a Dci Megane a few years back for the wife. Engen @ Tygervalley put petrol in after she requested Diesel, luckily we always ask for a cash slip, slip indicated diesel - turned out to be petrol, took the owner to small claims court after R4000 rands worth of damages to the engine. Took me six months of in and out of court, I was eventually granted almost R7000 by the commsioner.

Added costs was for lawyers letters which I had sent, and the guys 'attitude' in court didnt help him either.

They should make some adjustment to the tap nozzle and the diesel car's fuel opening so it should not be possible to even get a petrol nozzle into a diesel fuel opening and visa versa.

The nozzle for unleaded is smaller than the normal nozzle. Some vehicles (Hilux 2700i comes to mind) have a restriction hole plate to prevent the bigger nozzle from getting in, but sadly this does not help the diesel guys...

I make a point of it to always double check them while they are putting the nozzle in the car, trust no one...

Happened to me twice - the 1st time i never noticed full tank of unleaded on my Avant 1.9TDI I drove off and car just cut 2 kms away from the petrol station. When i looked at petrol slip i saw Unleaded... Manager at the Total was nice enough to get the car towed and drained and flushed - since i had already paid they just had to top up with Diesel.... But the car still drove like a boeing!!!

I was at that Engen @ Tygervalley before too, put in R200 with my old beetle. Since I was heading to the beach, didnt have my wallet with me. The guy put in the nozzle and walked away. When the tank clicked the nozzle when full, the total stood at R426.

I told the guys I only had R200, and that I had ASKED for R200 so I wouldn't pay for the rest. Had a big fight with the guy who said he would drive behind me to my house so I could get my wallet so I could pay.

Some of these garage owners are real asses!!

Well illiteracy and stupidity FTL! I am for this very reason very alert whenever filling up with fuel to make sure that the attendant is filling with the correct fuel! Luckily never had something like this happen to me, but that is because it happened to my Dad twice through the years. First time was petrol in our old Hilux 2.4 - injectors and pump had to be replaced at Toyota paid for by the filling station. Second time around it was with the Isuzu KB280DT, luckily it was only a top up so literally as my Dad arrived home it started to misbehave. Realised what had happened and immediately had the tank emptied and flushed out with diesel. Took it to the agents and fortunately there was no damage. So from these experiences I learnt, never just say, "fill up...", specify exactly what needs to go into the car's tank and supervise.

At the end of the day, thank goodness you spotted it rather than driving off and finding out the horrible way. So as far as the car is concerned, its just had a bit of a tank flush, so hopefully any accumulated muck may have been drained... But it is bad that they still expected you to pay for the fuel!! Would take my business elsewhere for sure!

My e36 328i has restrictor in filler pipe , makes petrol attendant catch a wake up !!
In early 80,s stopped at garage and told attendant to put in R10 , then went into garage office ,came out gave attendant the R10 and he put in R10 . Car was nearly full !!, obviously two attendants each put in R10 !!
