Replacement Discs and Pads

So far I just had bad luck with aftermarket brakes. Metelli, Ferodo, ATE

All had some or other issue, either squealing, warped discs, etc.

I wanted to try Hella now, but they no longer make it for my car.

OEM is very expensive, but is seems as if I will have to fit them. At least then I know I will not have issues for 40-50k KM.

Still looking for other recommendations.

Thanks for the responses guys. From what I gather overall, OEM is the way to go.
It is on the pricey side but given that I cover less than 10k kms per year, its not something that I would need regular maintenance on, so might as well spend the premium.

Good day gents, anyone have any updates on this?

Made the mistake of putting "cheap" discs on my 520d (R4500 for Deslera discs and pads).

After 2000km I've started getting vibrations at low and high speed braking. The pads look like they're visibly crumbling/cracking so might be pad deposits causing the vibrations.

Has anyone gotten away with using Goldwagen discs and not experienced any vibrations?

For pads I'm leaning towards Surebrake or Febi.

Had issues twice on my 520D f10 with "Zimmerman" discs from Goldwagen. Bought discs from Imcomex with TRW pads...happy

Thanks for this - was actually considering getting Zimmerman. Will stay clear. Which discs did you get from Imcomex and how much were they? Just got prices from BMW - R3400 per disc....

I would contact Vari Racing. They can heat treat and then machine a surebrake disc and make it harder to last longer. They can machine some J-slots in it for you for better braking performance and often sell Brembo replacement pads for most vehicles.

Personally I would stay with OEM, but this would be the next best alternative. I have used them extensively for track day setups and also for aftermarket daily setups that performed better them OE on my (now sold) TTRS.

My F30 340i was due for front pads towards the end of last year. These were replaced with Febi pads and the existing brake discs were skimmed.

The rear pads were then done earlier this year and I went OEM this time as I can't handle the occasional squeak from the fronts (even though it rarely happens). The rear discs skimmed as well.

Over the past 2 months I've been noticing at higher speeds (100km/h+), that there is a slight shudder when braking. Last week I drove to Grabouw with a somewhat heavy foot. Let's just say I went more than 100km/h... and the vibration is a bit more noticeable under braking.

I had a suspension and shock test done this past weekend to make sure everything is fine. Everything is perfect and tyres are good. The two shops that I've gotten advice from both say that it can only be the brake discs. With 86000kms now on the clock, I feel it may be good timing as well for new discs.

My question is should I stick to OEM and is it worth the premium for brake discs? I am leaning towards this option, or are there upgraded discs anyone can recommend for similar cost to OEM?

Or do you guys recommend saving a few bucks and strongly recommend a "cheaper" aftermarket brand?

In the exact same situation as well. Mechanic recommends installing OEM as well, although pricey think this would be the only option. I did price Febi brake discs at Goldwagen. These were the slotted ones, and they didn't come in at a much lower pricing over OEM.

It's been some time ago so can't really remember the brand name (could have been SWAG) but I have had them on my X5 too and never had a problem. All paired with TRW pads from IMCOMEX. The discs price was less than half that from BMW then, but please check cos lately BMW prices are competitive on some parts, especially if you DO ask for a discount.

Discs at BMW are R3400 EACH. For a 520d that seems excessive. I'm not really sure what to do now. I'm from the Eastern Cape, and can't seem to get prices from Imcomex.

So after doing some more research, it seems as though there is one key difference between all of these aftermarket discs from Febi, Zimmerman, Meyle etc.

That is the fact that the OEM discs are two piece rotors - the hub section is aluminum.

This allows for better heat dissipation between the ring and the wheel hub.

Maybe some people are able to get away with using one piece solid steel rotors for normal daily use, and don't experience vibrations/warping. I do have a heavy foot and drive spiritedly, so probably explains why the aftermarket discs warped so quickly.

I suppose I will have to bite the bullet and buy the OEM ones - lesson learned.
