Has anyone tried the OEM exhaust mod? I'm thinking of doing this to an M240i exhaust back box I have.

Have not done it, I'm actually selling the OEM box so someone can do this to and save a ton versus buying an Mperformance exhaust.

If you got the car, get it done on your oem box. cut and weld is done at the top so it is neat too

Nope. you do it on your standard backbox, non-MPE.

Yep for sure, it is in fact louder than the MPE when done. I opted for this mod and did not regret it, and when you do a mid-pipe, it gets even better. with the mid-pipe, it benefits from a more bassier sound.

Or will one still be able to have quiet and loud depending on valve being open or closed?

No, the valves won't be pointless bru...
So what happens is the volume and bass of the box gets louder...the valve still operates...basically like the MPerf box.

My understanding is that the BMW M Performance exhausts do not have valves?

Although if it still has the valves and allows you to have valves closed for quiet operation and then its louder with valves open - that is awesome!
