Updates needed!

@"Kyle" to which updates do you refer..?  :fencelook:

I hear you now have an engine that starts with "S"  :fencelook:

And if you're feeling kind, some updates on the 330i after the altitude adjustment

You mean the 'S'-low car..? @"Riaad" had a look this weekend, so far its been zero to nowhere in almost a week  :roflol:

@"AshG108" thanks bud.. I am a bit slow with updates, always reminds me of the comment from @"sash" haha.. Suspension was fitted a few weeks ago but have been preoccupied with getting the 'new' ride, hence no updates.

I now need to update this thread and start a new one.

Looks like this 'S'-low car has even better fuel economy that the 20d  :biglol:

An update I have been meaning to get around to for some time, but had a few other things on the go.. I had the suspension fitted at the back end of June by HiQ Mobeni, after many referrals from friends and family.. I got there early in the morning and after chatting to Selvan, I decided that I would leave the car there as he mentioned that it would take him almost the whole day to complete. He was quite surprised with the number of parts acquired and the associated costs, as most people normally do not replace everything. Unfortunately I wasn't present so I have no pictures of the progress, Selvan did say that everything was past its prime and its better that I decided to just refresh everything.

Collected the car in the afternoon and took a quick detour to meet up with a fellow fanatic. On the short drive there, the difference in the car's ride was remarkable.. I was pleasantly surprised with the way the car felt and handled, despite it only being a few kilometres away. I was worried that the sports springs would make the car too low but happy to report that the car sits perfectly now and is not unusable in any way. I have received quite a few positive comments on the car's new stance and I think a set of spacers will really finish this off.

On to a few (dirty) pics that were taken during the stop over:

Since then I have taken the car for a good few PROPER hooning sessions and the difference really is night and day, this is by no means an exaggeration. I always thought the car handled fairly well and predictably despite the old, tired original suspension.. I've consistently found over the years driving many of these models, that the E46 chassis is quite 'chuckable' in the twisties, this upgrade has just heightened this belief. The car undoubtedly feels very tight, composed and flat through the corners.. I enjoy the 'new' feel of the suspension and have a lot more confidence in pushing the car really hard now at the top end.

With the advent of winter and its inherent ability to kill batteries, I ended up needing to purchase a new battery with my infrequent usage of the car. The old 658 lasted 6 years, which I really can't complain about. Given that I have aftermarket sound and will soon be putting in OEM xenon headlights, I opted to go for the 668 battery from BMW. This is the OEM battery for the E46 M3 and an upgrade from the normal E46 battery.

Really very happy overall and I have no regrets with this expensive labour of love. Well worth the outlay and honestly, just makes me feel even more in love with this car. A proper photo shoot is in order, this will be done once I've had a chance to polish the car..

I've always maintained that there is just something special about an E46, that belief still stands.. :blowheart:

I can now finally say my modding journey is complete on the E46, well if my list on the first page is anything to go by.. Something that has been pending since my acquisition was a set of xenon headlights, I ended up doing so many other things over my 7 year journey with the car and sorta left these by the whey side. Since having gotten used to life with xenons, I found myself opting to use the other cars at night simply because the lighting was better.. This was the push I needed when @Kyle found a set of OEM xenons for the car, way back in February in 2020. I had purchased the lights and had them lying in the cupboard at home, whilst I was busy with sorting out the suspension refresh.

Fast forward a few months, I finally got tired of waiting and decided it was time to get these on the car.. First thing I did was purchase new Phillips DS2 bulbs and a xenon specific set of angel eyes. @Kyle was gracious enough to offer to clean up the headlights when I purchased and he went one step further and fitted the new angel eyes for me when he pulled the lights apart to clean them for me, thanks a mil bru! I had looked around for someone that would be able to fit OEM xenons to my car, but most places could only assist with a retrofit kit or would fit these, without coding which meant a permanent error on the dash. I decided to hold on the fitment for a bit whilst I explored other options.

The Before:

The After (WHAT A DIFFERENCE):

With the car spending a lot of time in the basement over the lockdown, I was due for the annual polish and a new place opened up down the road from me, Blak Automotive.. The fact that this new car wash was being used by the Ferrari and Porsche dealerships, amongst others, made me feel more comfortable. I decided to take the X3 there for a polish a few days earlier, I was happy with the products (Mothers, Turtle Wax and the like) and the methods used. Mentioned this to a few of the Durban members and we had a small, COVID friendly meet up and proceeded to do a small photoshoot..

A few days later I had received some good news about a job offer in Johannesburg and a trip up was in order. Having been denied the 330i on the last trip, it was a given that this would be the car to drive up in.. Since the last service in Jan 2020, the car had only covered 3.5k and the trip to Jhb would put me over the 5k interval. I also had the xenons that needed fitment and the only person that was able to assist, was based in Jhb.. I was really looking forward to the road trip and giving the car a chance to stretch its legs, especially with this being the first long distance trip since 2015...

TBC, since I can only upload 10 pics at a time.

Given the spirited driving to make up time for leaving late, I was pretty happy with the fuel consumption as the X3 was only 2l/100km lighter on the same journey but not nearly as fun, especially when pushing on the loud pedal.

Made arrangements to have the xenons fitted over the weekend, before work started on the Monday. Also managed to meet @Tjoppies who came through to purchase my old headlights.

Spent a week in Jhb and decided that since working from home is still a thing, I would work from Durban until the office reopens and before I looked at relocation. Made my mileage milestone on the way down and was pretty damn happy at the overall consumption for an almost 20 year old, 3.0l 6 cylinder with performance software!

The car didn't skip a beat and performed faultlessly both on the trip up and down.. I thoroughly enjoyed all the mods I have done over time and finally got to appreciate it all together on a long drive. It was such a fun trip, having completely reaffirmed my love for this car and the open road.. Some pics after a good wash when I got back.

With that trip under the belt, a service is in order with the parts I procured at ABM whilst I was there. I also need to touch up quite a few stone chips or battle scars as I like to think of them.

Hard to believe its been 18 months since the last update on the showroom threads and some of the updates will be duplicated between threads, so please bear with me.. Time really has flown by and it has been a massive period of change for me personally, from a new job, to a new home in another province and the biggest blessing of all, a new addition to the family.. Not another car, as many may think but rather a baby boy that is already taking up all my time and attention (rightly so!).

Shortly after my return from Jhb to do the induction and collect my peripherals for the new job, I picked up that the ballast on the driver’s side was working intermittently and that meant the car was pretty much unusable at night. I called around and the ballast was prohibitively expensive, second hand wasn’t an option as there is no guarantee it will last. Got in touch with Jabsport and had this sorted by changing both ballasts to his own brand. Whilst I was there, my arm was twisted for a set of LED fogs – bright as hell (or is it heaven in this case).

Having met the mileage milestone on the way down, a service was due and I got around to doing it with my brother at my parent’s place. Completed a full service including a coolant flush as this was last changed when I overhauled the cooling system way back when. At the same time I also fitted a new ignition switch as the car had a tendency to not switch off after short distances, I could remove the key and it would throw all sorts of warning lights on the dash but not switch off. Having done some research, it could have been one of a few issues and the cheapest place to start was the switch. Thankfully this solved the issue and my only gripe is I didn’t go OEM (as this was part of troubleshooting), the feel of the ignition is different now and I prefer the old feel.

As I said in my previous update, I thought I was done with the car but the one thing I always wanted was a set of M wheels to compliment the rest of the Mtech 1.5 conversion. Knowing full well that the wide and narrow set I wanted would not work, I had left this by the whey side and that was the reason I refurbished the old wheels in shadow chrome and called it a day. Fast forward to December 2021 and @Riaad’s old set had come up for sale by the new owner, called him and managed to strike a deal. Wheels were packed up in a trailer and delivered to me by the owner as he was coming down to the coast for a family holiday. Wasted no time and had them fitted immediately at my parent’s place. This was my gift to the car for reaching (almost) 20 years of existence, that’s my rationale for buying them anyway.

A glaring issue that popped up when I changed the wheels was the fact that my red calipers were peeling where stones had made their mark and it looked pretty unsightly.. Decided a refresh was in order after nearly 5 years and proceeded to TWR to have this sorted in February, went with the same red as I liked the contrast. Also managed to do a whole 2k in the 12 months that followed, garage queen much (more on this).

I had a new OEM battery fitted some time back in 2020 and this gave out in March 2022, I still had a some of the warranty left and made a claim with BMW a few months later. They had to keep the car to run some tests and were happy that the battery was the issue, this was promptly replaced with a new one at the dealer at their cost. One of the reasons I prefer to go OEM, if I can help it.

I had planned to move with the family to my new place in June of this year and that meant I needed to get 2 cars up to Jhb before then. I treated the car to a valet and machine polish at Blak as the interior had developed some mildew having been parked off for a while due to the battery issue and I wasn’t keen to drive 5 hours breathing in mildew. Some pics after the valet:

I once again enlisted the help of my brother to pick a car to drive up and guess which one he chose.. No matter though, I thoroughly enjoyed the 30i and we had some fun on the way up with a few good cars, which made for an interesting trip.

Back to the garage queen moniker, I finally have my own garage for the cars and I couldn’t be happier. During the renovation stage of the property, I had additional plug points installed to accommodate the trickle chargers I so desperately needed. Part of the reason the batteries in both cars kept running down, as I only drove them once or twice a month when time permitted.

Also received a hell of a lot of love for the E46 in Jhb, even had 2 security guys at a centre flag me down so they could ogle the car and make an offer.

That brings the 30i showroom thread up to date and another service will be due in a few months at 275k.. Thanks for following.
