My 2005 E46 M3 Thread

So after owning my 2007 350z HR for nearly 4 years, I decided it was time to try something different. I really loved the HR, it had all the right mods and was superb to drive. Made great power, brakes were amazing and handling was awesome for the minimal mods it had. It ate up the mountain passes.

But it was the second year of rona and car pricing was already on the up, so I decided to post it up for sale at the beginning of June last year. A week later, it was sold and I had made some decent money on it, even after the mods.

I already knew exactly what I wanted next. Something I remember looking at as a kid and absolutely loving. A Dakar Yellow E36 M3. I had already started looking at E36 M3's for sale long before I sold the Z, but every car I found and went to see and drive just wasn't up to my standard and needed LOADS of work. Which I'm not scared of doing, but things add up quickly with these cars, and I just didn't think it was worth spending that much money on a car that needed the amount of work I felt it did to get up to my standard.

I thought about it for a while, and decided to rather up my budget and get something that would most likely be in better condition, and also drive a whole lot better since I enjoy driving. I really did want that 90's experience of the E36, but ultimately I knew the E46 M3 would be the better car.

I remember seeing my first E46 M3 in person when I was 12 years old. A Silver Grey Metallic M3 on the 19" diamond cut wheels. Instant love affair. I hoped that one day I'd be able to own one.

After months of searching, a good friend of mine found me a car and arranged for me to have a look at it. He had sent me photos, and I already knew I HAD to have it.

The day I went to view and drive it for the first time:

I slept on it that night, but ultimately I knew I wanted the car.
We discussed pricing with the owner, and three days later I was the owner of this beautiful 2005 E46 M3, FSH with BMW with everything very well documented, and just under 98k kms.

Completely stock, barring a set of H&R lowering springs. Not perfect, but damn near close, and I knew I could easily get it looking and driving just the way I wanted.

First drive as the owner, later that afternoon after collecting it.

First wash at home.

First little morning run with the guys.

Popping in at SMG for a few parts. Most of the guys came out to have a look at it and absolutely loved it.

Mocking up some authentic TE37SL's. A wheel that looks fantastic on most cars, especially the E46.

I was really enjoying the car! I put my first 1000km with it on VERY quickly. I drove it as much as I could on weekends to figure out what it needed and what else I wanted to do with it.

But first, I wanted to take it to Dynotech and see how healthy it was. Little did I know, these cars have a 6000rpm limiter if you don't activate dyno mode, so I'll have to go back and activate it and see what it really makes all the way through the rev range.

Don't ask about the plate, its not real, lol!

On 3 October, I began digging into the interior. The trims had that funky texture that happens to E46's, so time to start stripping everything off.

With all the trim out, I could take a closer look.

With that done, I sent it off to a mate of mine who was able to match the colour and finish all but bang-on. Super happy with how it came out. Pictures really do not do it justice, looks like brand new OEM.

Seeing that BMW discontinued the steering wheel M badge, I had another good mate of mine recreate it for me to make it as good as new again to match the trim.

Thanks guys!

So next up was getting the car to feel right on the road. The car had been sitting for a fair amount of time before I bought it. The tyres were very old, hard and too stretched for my liking. Naturally my first thought was Michelin PS4S. But then I remembered coming across a Tyre Reviews Youtube video and remembering him being extremely impressed with Goodyear's Eagle F1 Supersport. I did a bit more research into them, and eventually made the decision to be different and try them out. I also went up in width to get rid of the stretched look and have a meatier setup.

Cat approves.

IMG-0832.jpg

Before fitting them though, I figured while I was fitting new tyres, I may as well replace the suspension bushings. The car felt sketchy when even thinking about a little bit of spirited driving. Was not confidence inspiring at all, felt terrible. So I made an FCP Euro order, and 10 days later I received the bits I needed.

IMG-1535.jpg

On 7 January, I dropped the car off with Ian at Speedy Auto Care to replace the bushings, as he had sourced my rear F1 Supersports and offered to refurb the wheels before fitting the tyres. Nice job, but think I'm going to redo them as I want a more hyper-silver finish.

On 11 January, the car was finished and I went to collect it. I also gave them the alignment specs I wanted after researching what the guys overseas do for a fast road/track setup. Man, the fitment was so much tougher with the meatier tyres. Much better.

Fitment.

IMG-1599.jpg

SO much better.

IMG-1607.jpg

So the first thing to do was to take it on a good, long, spirited drive to test the car after the bushings and sticky meats.
Mind blown. Completely different car! Felt so solid on the road now, and all the grip I could ever want. GT4 driver says he can't keep up mid-corner and corner exit on slightly spanked Cup2's. Win.

IMG-1787.jpg

Back home and onto the ramps for a wash and undercarriage wash.

IMG-2115.jpg

I used the car every other weekend to get to grips with the new setup, and it was great, but still room for a little improvement on the alignment.

On 10 March, it was time for its 100k service. So off to Divan Wentzel at Wentzel Motor Works, he'll be the only one maintaining the car for me while I own it. Being an ex Porsche and BMW master mechanic, I have more than enough trust in him to keep it running perfectly.

IMG-2456.jpg

New OEM filters, including fuel filter (which weirdly wasn't changed by BMW at Inspection II) and in with fresh Motul X-Power 10w-60 fully synthetic, and a bottle of Motul Injector cleaner considering the fuel filter hadn't ever been changed until now. The brake system will get Motul RBF660 when I do the brakes in the near future. I asked him to give the car a full inspection and bolt check as well, and he was happy to report that everything was great and the car was in fantastic condition. We also discussed some possible future upgrades to help my in my search of all the grip I was after.

M3 friends.

Alignment V2. Maxxed out the camber on the front strut tower slots in the effort to gain a little more front end grip, and a ballhair of toe out over 0 to help with on center steering response. Also dialed in the rear a little more to get everything even.

Thank you all so much for the comments! Much appreciated, trying my best to keep this car as clean as possible while still enjoying it as it was meant to be enjoyed.

Congratulations on an AWESOME car!!! Did you ever fit the TE37SL's? Would love to see them on the car.

I didn't, they came off my mate's R33 GTR so unfortunately the wrong PCD for a test fit.

After I had the V2 alignment done, car felt great! A noticeable amount more front end grip, but still room for more improvement which I have a solution for.

But now it was time to hit the track!

A private trackday was organized with a small group of us, which really gave me a chance to understand the car better in a safe environment.

An incredibly fun day, got loads of laps in and the car performed amazingly, besides the brakes. I think everyone knows that standard E46 M3 brakes are terrible, so I took it extremely easy under braking just to make sure I didn't have any issues and to preserve the brakes. I stuck to driving cautiously, didn't have any desire to go off track and potentially hurt the car.

With that in mind, as well as the cones in the turn 4 section of the track which created a weird line through there (I'll upload the GoPro footage sometime), I was happy with the consistent 1:32's the car was putting out. It has way more left in it, I'm very impressed with it.

And now we're up to date. I dabble in a bit of photography now and then, so here are some shots I've captured during my ownership of the car since September. Enjoy!
