RE: The Island Life - Mauritius
Hi there!!!

We went about two years back. Beachcomber all inclusive Le Mauricia !!

It was freakin - amazing - 10 days of pure heaven.

The hotel was in Grand Baie so it is really a lekka atmosphere.

Make sure that you go for the "bbq" on the catamaran - that is something else. And the para-sailing.

The prices of stuff (in you not doing the all-inclusive) is quite high.
For example, A bottle of Jack Daniels cost 1450.00 ruppees (aprox R500.00)

Hope you have a fanatastic time!

RE: The Island Life - Mauritius
Seriously though, I went last year and had a lot of fun. Went on one tour and the rest of it was in the water or on a catamaran (made me want to buy a catamaran even though I'm in GP LOL). Parts of it feel very much like N/Coast KZN but some of it is also quite exotic.

The constant bargaining in the markets annoyed me... every transaction took 10x longer than a 'normal' transaction involving bargaining (eg: as you would find in India)... and some guys just would not take no for an answer.

Food was pretty good but alcohol was cocktails were horrific and expensive. We did an all-inclusive package but got sick of the buffet. Fortunately we did get restaurant vouchers as part of this that made the food (Steak, lamb etc) no more expensive than a good place here in SA - had to book these a couple of days in advance though as they would fill up quickly.

For the money, I'd still choose Seychelles every time though.

It will be good of driving around youselves.
Parasailing, undersea walk, dolphine watch trip, deep sea fishing are allways good.
Water is expensive in hotel if not full board. But you can always get from local supermarket.

We have rented out a block of apartments cause there are about 15 people going, so self catering is the route we are going.

my unit is the only air-conditioned one Rofl

Le Mauricia is awesome.

Was there on honeymoon.

Don't use the hotel mini bar, rather go the local shops and buy your bottled water, etc.

Dont exchange your Rands for Rupees at the airport. Do it in Grand Baie, cause you can negotiate the exchange rate.

When my wife and i were there the buffet was great, it was different everyday.

Drinks are expensive, my wife and i spent over R1000 on drinks, and that just having cooldrink with our meals and cocktails only on the day before we left.

I really didn't enjoy Port Louis, i would avoid it, rather spend your time in and around the north on the island

Confirmed.

In fact you can take it as a given, that ALL ports are holes.

RE: The Island Life - Mauritius
Theres nothing to see in Port Louis, dont waste your time going there.

You are going on an island holiday, so i guess you want to avoid people. Dont waste your time in the market or port louis.

Theres a national park which is a protected reef, the snorkelling is amazing. Coral are still in good shape as the water is deep so not too many tourists snorkel there (1st timers).

The undersea walk was amazing and the diving is very very good.
The day trip catamaran ride to Isle Au Cerfs is good as well as a drive to the Volcano top and the the 7 sands place.

Theres also a submarine ride you can do, very cool, they take you to a wreck. Yes you can dive to a wreck, but my wife cant swim and I dive so it was the best of both for her.

Other than that, stay on the resort.

Also, dont take any cabs with anyone offering to take you to a cheap place for discounts. Its a rip off.

The Island Life - Mauritius
I went there last year. Stayed at the Hilton, that is in flic en flac. That area has a great vibe at night. Did half board because I didn't wish to spend all my day at the hotel. Drinks are crazy expensive. A 300ml coke was R100 at the Hilton. I went to a mall and bought water and cool drinks. Taxis were insanely priced so I rented a car, was R500 a day for renault. The catamaran to isle au cerfs is must. I used my hotel to book this, ensure I get a decent catamaran. Roads are decent but take a while to move around the island. Stay a away from port Louis on work days in the afternoons, traffic will drive you mad. Port Louis had nothing to offer apart from horrible markets with poor quality stuff anyway. The seven sand was ok, for some reason I expected to be awed, I was not. It's also gona be a long drive to get there.

I waisted R2500 on a few hours of deep Sea fishing, spent lots of time searching. The skipper said fishing is bad in mauritius due to the Chinese fishing boats. Maybe it was BS and you may have better luck.

I've been to Seychelles, and like Llew said, I'd also prefer to go back there, but Mauritius is worth the visit.

Good was good, not to badly priced, just drinks are very expensive.

Try their vanilla rum, was pretty good.

You could also do the statue of Lord Shiva, that's a site to see. Really stunning.

RE: The Island Life - Mauritius
Hi.
I just came back from Mauritius in December. Stayed at le Morne.
Great getaway.
Going there was with air Mauritius. Not a bad plane
Coming back was with SAA....terrible small plane.

Anyway. We did the following/ things to do.

1. In the South:
Volcano sight seeing.
National garden and black river Gorges
Zip line (must do). The have 6 lines. Including a 1,5 km long line.
23 couloured earth. Nothing special....at the zip line.
Temples (shiva etc)
Quad biking near the zip lines.
The ship making shop. ( things are actually cheaper there. Jewellers and stuff)
Kite surfing.

2. East
Catamaran cruises with parasailing, snorkeling, Swimming, kite surfing.

3. North
Visit to Port Louis and grand bay. Nothing special.
Underground submarine (must Book 2 days in advance.). Very expensive.
Taxis are expensive. We used a local agency when we got there. Rs2200 for 4 ppl for the whole day. Go wherever u want. Let me know if u need details.

Anyway have a great time.

RE: The Island Life - Mauritius
Be warned. Leave your cellphone at home. I'm here in Mauritius now on business. Got here on Sunday night from Madagascar.

Before I left SA I activated Travel Saver on Vodacom like usual. I got an sms at 01h25 this morning from Vodacom telling me after 2 days of being here that Mauritius is not part of the Travel Saver program and my data spend is R4000.00.

I will be fighting Vodacom but don't hold out much hope. RedNo

PS. I have been using the hotel wifi 90% of the time Thumbdown

I do the same as well, I activate travel saver before i leave on any trip however, I thrive on wifi unless i am seriously stuck and have no signal.

Learn the lesson the hard way when i travelled to France in 2014...dat abill came to R7300 after sending a few MMS lol
