E46 318i pulling badly to left under braking
Guys, my bro in law's 318 is pulling badly to the left when braking.
It has 18" Style 193s, brand new tyres out on Thursday and wheel alignment is fine.

Any idea what the problem could beBangdesk

How old are the brakes? Would a warped brake disc cause a shudder or make it pull to the side?

My guess is that your right pads are shot. Only the left ones are making contact, perhaps? Iono

+1 on the brakes

also don't be so hasty to rule out the wheel alignment, you say its 100%, but always good to double check, and whilst they double check the wheel alignment have them go over the suspension components as well to check for lose or worn items as well.

but generally if it rides straight and true, and vibration free, but only under hard braking veers off...its probably brakes

Wow that must be scary! It's gripping too hard on the left brake then?

RE: E46 318i pulling badly to left under braking
Alignment was done last week when 4 new tyres were put.
There is no vibration while driving.
I drove it yesterday from Centurion to Loftus. The ride is still great, smooth, no irritating niggles. When I left the steering to see if it pulled it stayed straight.

I guess my bro needs to start with replacing front pads and see from thereThumbs

Thanks guys for the input

Its a Seized caliper...

Get a caliper seal kit from stealers and replace on both fronts, its just a set of rubber o rings that sit on the piston which moves in and out which build with dust and jam up..

RE: E46 318i pulling badly to left under braking
Interesting.

From my experience, I would say tyre tread pattern should also be considered, I use to have Yokohama A-Drive’s on my car and it reacted harshly to the contour of the road under braking.

I also have had issues with my front brake calipers and the symptom was a sharp jab through the steering wheel as you apply the brakes, I think there was some pulling during braking.

Then of course the wheel alignment should checked again, odd that it now pulls after the fitment of the wheels right??

It was pulling before the alignment was done which led me to beliee that the alignment was not out by that much as initially suspected.
Thanks Kish, will try that caliper kit as wellThumbs

Hey, if you havent checked the alignment i would recommend doing so, as i had a situation where they guys had set my car perfectly within specs.., but for the facelift, when my car isnt( not the 5er). when using the right settings it made the difference, similarly when i had my 180i conquest, most the alignment guys would do the aligment using a tazz setup.

I dont think the alignment would cause such a sharp pull though, am also leaning towards the braking issue, Am sure a roadworthy place can check brake efficiency at the wheels at little or no cost?
