Nissan R33 GTR | 450Kw | Scunick's Build!

This is a project I was extremely keen to handle with Nick (Scunick) specifically because of the car. The Nissan GTR has always captured my attention, though I never quite understood the reason or the following this car has I hoped to learn more about this machine throughout our build.

Nick had just received the car back from a magnificent engine build by Wessel, with the RB26 motor now pushing "around" 450Kw and with 1 Bar Boost I didnt expect something practical or easy to drive.

We collected both his GTR and his E46 M3 (M3 was coming in for a spot repair) early in Paarl ready for the drive back.

This was a very intimidating prospect for me, originally declining the offer to drive the car. Not only is this the fastest and most powerful vehicle I have ever driven, but its also the most unpredictable.

Nonetheless, a sleepness night passed and we collected the two cars:

The first to be tackled was the Carbon Wrapped Interior, a great idea at the time but not very long-lasting and the finish was ruining the look of the car.

Jeanre and I began stripping the interior:

Then began the laborious task of stripping the vinyl and the glue, it took two guys an entire day to get this right!

In the meantime the mirrors were sprayed gloss black and refitted to the car before being flatted and polished to a rich high gloss:

Then, with the interior trim finally complete we refitted and stood back to admire the amazing transformation to the interior!

And on this note we called it a day!

Part Two coming up!

Part Two!

The following morning we...(went)...ahead with the next phase of the exterior, respraying the roof gloss black to match the mirrors.

With the vinyl removed we found a rather nasty dent on the roof. Not keen to remove the headliner to pop it the team filled it with Flexi filler followed by a spray on filler to ensure it was unnoticeable.

Then came the gloss black! Which despite being Auto Baked for over an hour still had the team on edge baking it for a further hour outside (They have limited space):

Then Shawal, the spray-painter who did the job began wet-sanding before polishing:

Despite it now being past 7 in the evening the team continued working, often re-checking and re-doing the polishing to make sure the work was 100% spot on.

But of course, with the dark comes photo opportunities!

With the job completed we returned the car to Nick, little we know what weather awaited the GTR and Cape Town only days later.

Part Three coming up!

Part Three!

With most of the cosmetic work on the exterior complete it was time for us to focus on a few of the niggles.

To begin with I met Nick on his farm on a Saturday morning and we completed the following:

- Fixed Door Rattle
- Fixed Horn which was working
- Fixed Dash Rattle
- Fixed the drivers door which was not locking
- Refixed an interior panel with a new screw
- Investigated a mis-behaving window switch, its going to be replaced

One of the issues I noticed between suppliers with the car was that the right Mid Speaker often just switched off, I checked the wiring myself but found no issue... So off we went to Shafiek.

To explain, an absolutely mad sound install which honestly blows any Harmon Kardon/B&W/Bose etc sound system out of the water.

We decided since my Smart was going in for repairs just down the road to go from Paarl via the R44 and Baden Powell Road. Naturally a photo opportunity presented itself:

We arrived after dropping off the Smart at the rebuilders.

Initially a faulty amp was suspected after testing the cross-overs so that was removed:

With the amp removed, we headed off to a two day appointment. :fencelook:

Yes, the inevitable happened! During the storms Nicks garage roof blew off and the Industrial Light Fittings he had landed on the freshly sprayed gloss black roof before sliding down the side of the car scratching the entire right side of the car through the paint and leaving marks on the left front of the bonnet as well as various dents. :argh:

I will let the pics do the talking...

Instead of putting the project on hold, I decided to remove the headlights for the next project, Quad Bi-Xenon Headlights!

sbIMAG1787a.jpg

I say Jeanre and I but honestly it was mostly Jeanre struggling like hell to remove the awkward placed nuts and screws holding the lights in. Generally people remove the bumper to do it, but through effort and blind effort Jeanre got it right!

sbIMAG1789.jpg

sbIMAG1790.jpg

Shawal still prepping away!

sbIMAG1795.jpg

We then dropped off the headlights to be converted so long and the following morning after collecting the GTR completed to perfection we headed off to our lighting contact to have the Quad Bi-Xenons wired up and re-fitted- What a job!

sbIMAG1797b.jpg

sbIMAG1797c.jpg

Managing to get the parks and Angels working!

sbIMAG1802.jpg

After much effort, we finally got the lights working. Pictured below is just two of the 4 Bi-Xenons operating. The following morning we wired up the other two with great difficulty and a huge amount of applause must go to Jeanre and Zaid for getting this right despite how many times the GTR simply laughed at them before sticking its tongue out and refusing to work. :biglol:

sbIMAG1805.jpg

And the following morning back to have the freshly sprayed grills and indicator surround fitted... GTR and M3 happy having a quick bite of fuel. :joy:

sbIMAG1811.jpg

Coming up! We have a custom splitter made for Nick followed by a massive Detail to restore this beauty from showroom condition to absolutely perfect before closing up the project.

Thank you for reading!
