BMW Diesal oil breather replacement?

Hi guys... Just curious to know how many guys actually change the crankcase breather on their diesels? I changed mine on my 330d and was surprised it still had the loo roll type, I replaced with the vortex type (850) which ironically is cheaper than the loo roll (1005)... I learnt the hard way with my previous 320d and not changing this item... Any opinions out there?

I kept the loo roll, since it lets less oil escape (BMW changed back to this one later presumably for emissions related reasons). Just remember to replace the loo roll every third oil service. The vortex one supposedly does not need to be serviced.

I did mine a few weeks back. I also had the foam filter and it was solid as a rock. No pressure was getting out there.

I also went for the vortex jobbie rather.

When i replaced the loo type seperator for the vortex type less than a year ago the price was about R480 - R500 iirc for the vortex. That was at Helderview BMW in Strand. Seems prices are much higher in Durbs!!??

hey,what are you talking about? Where is this and whats the negatives with leaving this part be?
Also should i replace this on my car that has 135k km on?

Was that for a 320 or 330d? Cos in the link that P1000 put up shows a Loo roll and a vortex type breather and Although they look the same the part number that I was supplied was different.... Hence perhaps the price diff...

Replaced both loo type rolls on my 530d E39 2003 and 2003 X5 3l diesel (same motor) Said E46 320d on the label iirc, so i assume the part is the same although the number may be different

Here is a pic of the old 'toilet roll' and the new vortex type. As you can see, the vortex type cannot clog up and is there for life.

BMW wants R446 before discounted to R380 for the foam filter.
Guess I'll be changing mine over the weekend.

How can I check which one I have on my e90 320d and where is it located on the engine?

On the X3 2,0d (same motor as the E90 320d) it sits under the plastic engine cover which you have to remove first, and between the injector wiring and the aircleaner housing. If you look at the pictures in the above posts you will recognize it and remove it by loosening the 3 or 4 bolts and replacing the loo type with the vortex type filter. Easy enough and maybe an hour job if it is your first time

Hi guys if you take this filter out and just leave it empty it will slowy kill your turbo's boost so I no longer feel my turbo after 4 days of driving with out it, which is why I am going to go monday and get a new one.
But please can someone tell me where I can get it so cheap BMW menlyn want R850 after discount

yeah replaced mine and sold the car..... also i just gave a brand new one to a forum member last week... pity you didnt ask sooner....

The 40k was applicable to the loo roll. Once you replaced with the new vortex type, you are done for life.

Changed mine today e90 320d (M47N2), and it was quite frustrating that I had to remove so many things, and only had to use Allen Key plus 8" spanner.

I removed the following:
a) Main engine cover,
b) Pollen filter housing (So maar replaced my pollen filter),
c) Loosened the Back engine cover and moved it to the passenger side,
d) Loosened the air filter cover, and moved it to drivers side of engine to get my hands in.
e) Breather housing was held in by 4 hex bolts, removed them and took out the housing, swapped out the internal filter, and put back everything together.

Some pics:
I couldn't get the air filter cover off without removing the stabilizer bars, so had to work around them.

Had to change the gaskets too. There wasnt a lot of room to work in.
