E46 320d no power
Hi All, new to this forum so would like to say Hi to everyone and jump right in with a question on my 2001 320d E46 pre-facelift. Engine picked a hydraulic lock due to water being sucked up into the intake over 5 months ago, finally got her back from mechanic after head work was done and turbo reconditioned. The car now has no power when pulling away and when going over a speed hump you need to change down from second to first to get going again, driving up a hill sees you gearing back to 3rd and often 2nd gear. Found myself gearing back to 3rd on the highway the other day. Car smokes white smoke excessively, fault code shows airflow meter, the mechanic I used specializes in VW and I have used him for years with much success, but he seems stumped on this car. Now his friend who specializes in BMW has told him he may be out a few degrees on the oil pump timing? Car going to this guy on Tuesday. Another issue is the car stood so long it was covered in dust and now the sunroof does not close all the way, need to push the up button to get it closed to a max of 5mm from full closure and it does not tilt any more. Please could you guys shed some light on my 2 problems. Thank you in advance.

RE: E46 320d no power
hi and welcome..

two possible causes for white smoke on a diesel i can think of offhand, raw diesel exiting unburnt, or coolant entering the combustion chambers.

seeing as yours is a 2001 320d pre common rail, with distributer pump and one of the symptoms you are experiencing is low power, i would say its a good chance that whoever refitted the head got the distributer pump timing wrong, throwing the injection timing completely out, causing lots of unburnt diesel out the back..

might also be turbo related , no boost might also cause those symptoms, as might low compression on 1 or more cylinders..

hope this helps.. let us know what they find..

Hi Netercol

thank you for the reply, the guy it is going to on Tuesday told my mechanic he has got the pump/distributor timing wrong by a degree or 2. You have the same opinion of the fault so I can only but hope this is the case as the head is redone and the turbo is also reconditioned and egr has been cleaned.

Will definately keep you guys posted of the solution.

thank you

I agree on the diesel pump timing is off and will cause that smoke but will it really cause such a huge drop in performance. Won't leaks or cracks in boost pipes also cause that since now it's not getting enough air for all that diesel.

RE: E46 320d no power
Any more thoughts on possible causes. Definately getting pump timing checked on Tuesday.

RE: E46 320d no power
Just give the turbo a once over because low power might be that the turbo does not provide any boost.

Turbo reconditioned and seems to boost, all be it from 3500rpm to 4000 - sometimes 4500rpm and then you hear it waste. Lower than 3500rpm I dont seem to feel anything from the turbo, could it be the pump timing causing overfuelling that leads to this?

RE: E46 320d no power
Did physically you take out the turbo and recon'd it?

If so then chances are they might have adjusted the tentioner that opens the variable vanes. This will cause erratic boost patterns. This can be adjusted with the turbo on the car though.

For best results maybe have the car plugged into a diagnostics to monitor it correctly.

What Hellas said. Also check that all the vacuum lines are connected correctly.

RE: E46 320d no power
Well the car is finally on it's way back to my original mechanic, I had the sunroof guides replaced and the climate control module replaced as well as it was switching the fan on and off as it wished.

The problem according to Jacques from Fastserv in Menlyn was:

1) pump timing out by 8deg
2) vacuum pipe faulty
3) injector timing out ?

According to him it is running properly now, so will see this afternnon when I get her back.
